The song's message suggest and older and more life experienced individual wrote the lyrics. I find it intriguing that a 14 year old would have the insight to cheat pain and suffering associated with old age , whether mental or physical, by playing the painless card. Not that old age has a monopoly on pain and suffering.

I still haven't made very many individual comments, but I have listened again and again, everyone plays so wonderfully!!
Thank you again to everyone who has made such great comments about my recording. It has given me an incredible confidence boost, which seems to have had a positive effect on my playing overall!
08. Peyton - Nocturne in Bflat Minor Op.9.1 09. Sam Smith - Song Without Words, Opus 19/4 10. kokomo61 - Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 Adagio Cantabile
Sorry to put you all together here, but these three recordings are so lovely! You have all made me want to play these pieces, and I keep going back to them again and again.
13. HomeInMyShoes (HIMS, Homey, Home, Aaron) - Trois Gnossiennes Thank you for sharing this recording! It's great. The only Satie I have played is ... "Je tu veus" is that the right title?? And I disliked it immensely! (the music, not my playing!) Since then, I have been totally disinterested in Satie, but hearing your performance has caused me to reconsider. Your playing is wonderful, and reminds me of why Satie is so popular. (So maybe it was my playing...)
Peyton, you said:
Quote:
If I could "own" the piece near as well as you do I'll be happy. I have to say also, I found the way the piece was written out with stuff like "D.S. al coda" confusing.
When I first started playing this piece, I made sure to have a few sections memorized very quickly, because otherwise there is just too much page turning and it is a nightmare! You are right about it being confusing to follow the score. When playing, I attached little post-its (blue) so that my eyes would know where to go on the page when it was time to move back or forward. The next thing I did was give each section a name (not just the parts requiring movement, but any time there is any change in the music, I caleld that a section, like rehearsal marks). I made names that sort of told a story. Then I learned how the story went, and I learned the music associated with each part of the story. My original goal in doing this was just to be able to play the music from memory, but it ended up helping in other ways, because I suddenly had not just notes to hit, but a story to tell.
You might consider trying something like that. Hearing your recital recording, I am sure this piece will be very easy for you!

This was fun. Fun to listen to recordings, fun to read all the reviews, fun to learn about music and like Shirokuro, my motivation has skyrocketed thanks to this recital, not only having the courage to submit my piece, but all the feedback, although humbling, has done wonders for my confidence. I actually played my song live yesterday for someone and was able to stay with the piece instead of worry about what they were thinking.
Glad you enjoyed the Satie ShiroKuro. There are some very odd Satie compositions that I could see driving people away from him in droves. "Je tu veux" doesn't come to mind when I think of driving people away though. Sure, it's not the deepest piece, but it's a cute song. But then, I went and played one of the Quartre Preludes a couple of recitals ago. I'm surprised anyone clicked on the Satie this time.

49. Undone - Theme from “The Unfinished Symphony”
As I expected, just an excellent rendition - extremely well played with fine control - very assured interpretation and delightful listening - (two thumbs up!)
50. GregF - Sleeping Through September
Sweet and contemplative piece - nicely done.
51. ShiroKuro - While the Trees Sleep
A pleasant enough piece, but overall it seemed like more of an extended warmup exercise than a highly structured, ingeniously melodic New Age composition that one could really get into and listen to intensely - maybe it's so subtle that it requires repeated hearings - but you played it with great control and a fine touch, i.e., flawlessly.
52. EJR (Elwyn) - "Ich ruf', zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" [I call on Thee, Lord] BWV 639
Typical Bach and very well played.
53. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Tooi hi no Kizuato
Lovely piece lovingly played.
54. MaryBee - Reverie
Maybe my favorite Debussy - you bring out the beautiful melody nicely - time well spent and music well played!
I remember hearing some years ago a striking version of the main theme of this piece with lyrics sung by the Norman Luboff Choir on an album with other "Classical" themes set to lyrics. It was a gorgeous album & I wish I still had it.

Hi JF, When I played this for my mom and dad, they said that there is a song called "My Reverie" based on this music. Well, just this weekend I was looking through a 1930s (I think) songbook, and found the music and lyrics in it. Just for fun I played it through, but didn't like it nearly as much as Debussy's original. I wonder if this is the same song you had on your album.

First of all, thanks to Monica and mahlzeit for their effort in coordinating this. It's truly amazing!
Second, thank you to the many people who commented on my piece (21 of you!). It's very motivating to hear so many positive comments, especially now that I don't have time for formal lessons.
jotur: You know, I haven't played it for my little girls, and I should! You asked if I'm feeling better. Here's the irony: since Thursday I've been sick with virtually the same flu'ish thing that I had just before recording my recital piece!
Now for some comments on the recital pieces, in chunks as I get time... I hope I don't run out of meaningful comments, because the ones I've listened to so far have all sounded so good.
01. jazzyprof - Nocturne op.48 no.1 What a beautiful piece--and your playing, too! Your piano has beautiful rich bass. I think I need to learn some Chopin...
02. dannylux / Mel - Bersagliera Wow--what intricate playing! Would be interesting to see a video.
03. epf - Prelude No. 16 in Db Major What a beautiful piece, especially the melody at the beginning. Great performance! Yet some more music I'll have to get
04. Ode2Joy - Piano Sonata in C, K330 Andante cantabile (2nd movement) I liked this piece and your performance. Thanks for sharing.
05. Ken. - German Dance in A Major, WoO.13, No. 11 Short and sweet. I liked this.
06. Mr Super-Hunky - Cristofori's Dream Ah, what a beautiful piece. I'm envious of your playing. Congrats on the no editing!
07. TrueBeginner - Autumn River Another memorable piece. I always enjoy your compositions.
08. Peyton - Nocturne in Bflat Minor Op.9.1 I'm so impressed with your ease and fluidity at the piano--both for this recital, and previous recitals and piano bars. What a beautiful piece, and beautiful / emotional playing. By the way, I like your artwork too!
09. Sam Smith - Song Without Words, Opus 19/4 I enjoyed this piece, and I didn't notice your bench creaking :-)
10. kokomo61 - Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 Adagio Cantabile Such a beautiful piece (another for my list!). Well played, and also a good rendition by GarageBand. Nice to see another musically inclined geek! (Bummer about your hard-drive crash.)

Our love Is a dream, but in my reverie I can see that this love was meant for me Only a poor fool Never schooled in the whirlpool Of romance could be so cruel As you are to me My dreams are as worthless as tin to me Without you life will never begin to be So love me As I love you in my reverie Make my dream a reality Let's dispense with formality Come to me in my reverie
and here is the original recording by the lyricist/orchestra leader Larry Clinton from 1938, with vocal:

The Norman Luboff Choir version was much better, as you would expect. But, an intersesting side discussion this.

Yeah, those lyrics are just a bit too sappy for me (but maybe typical for 1938 songs). But WOW! I had never heard of the Norman Luboff Choir. So I watched a couple YouTube videos with their music. I think anything done by them would sound great! (I have to see if I can get a CD of some of their songs for my dad. He would love it. One of the YT videos was "Ghost Riders in the Sky", which my dad used to play on his ukelele and sing to us.)

Slowly plowing my way through: Kokomo -- That was pretty darn good!
flyingfroggy -- You have nothing to be embarrassed about, that was great.
Glen R -- 6 months? Really nice touch for such a short time.
HIMS -- After hearing this, I love those three little pieces, too.
Kalai1 -- That was neat, and well played.
Mar-Red -- Delightful.
Sandy Moore -- Expressed very well.
Bill -- Your stuff is always cool.
Todd Vance -- 9 months? Wow!
Bunneh -- 15 months? that was very good, especially for a digital.
I cheated and skipped ahead to MaryBee. That's my favorite piece so far. You really got the opening measure, MaryBee.
The level of playing on these beginner recitals is amazing. After a year I still sound like I'm beating the keys with ball peen hammers, you folks are fantastic.
I just wanted to thank everyone again for all the great comments on my recital piece! Wow! So many responses - I'm overwhelmed! If this is the way it always is, I'm in for the long haul!
Everyone was so nice (considering my bad recording)!
I won't say never, but I will probably never play in public, so this recital venue is just peachy for me!
So, thanks to just about everyone who was in the recital and commented! John Frank-yeah, OK, Lanz is on the way... Undone-your comment was very sweet! Sam-thanks for a comment that made my day!
So many others "made my day" also..Thank you all!
Oh yeah, THANKS Mr. SH for starting the recital!!!!
I feel very blessed that I found this forum. Without it I never would have started taking piano lessons again, learned to record myself (or even thought about it!), and learned so much!
OK, maybe it's the 2 glasses of wine, but I really do appreciate all the great people here!

02. dannylux / Mel - Bersagliera Wonderful.
03. epf - Prelude No. 16 in Db Major How long did it take to match up the video and audio? Very well played.
04. Ode2Joy - Piano Sonata in C, K330 Andante cantabile (2nd movement) Nice singing style.
05. Ken. - German Dance in A Major, WoO.13, No. 11 Beethoven wrote “Three Country Dances” that really work the staccato in one hand against a legato in the other. Nicely played.
06. Mr Super-Hunky - Cristofori's Dream You have a nice touch/tone.
07. TrueBeginner - Autumn River I heard a consistent left hand and a right hand that bought out the melody. Would like to have heard one more note at the end.
08. Peyton - Nocturne in Bflat Minor Op.9.1 I respect anyone who can pay Chopin. Very romantic, Applause.
09. Sam Smith - Song Without Words, Opus 19/4 Good control of dynamics and tempo. Well played.

21. Riddler (Ed) - Easy Living Nice playing! Love the chord voicings!
22. cscl - Kuhlau Sonatina Op. 55, No. 2, I-II I am not familiar with Sonatinas, (I’m assuming there are small sonatas) but sounds like you did a good job. Good luck on your live recital!
23. Schubertian - Hungarian Melody (D817) This sounds really fun (but difficult) to play! Nice job!
24. kawaigirl1 - Like the wind Love the piece and the playing! (now I need to look into Stanton Lanier) And the Roland sure does sound nice.
25. Carl Mc - Piano Sonata No. 14 OP 27/2 1st Mvt (Moonlight Sonata) Such a well known piece like this usually invites more technical criticism, of which I am not qualified to offer. I tried this piece way too early in my piano journey, could never quite bring out the melody. Sounds like you did a great job!! (esp for only 18 months)
26. Triryche (Rich) - In God's Hands geeze, after a year you’d think you would have finished this by now!
27. Jazzwee - Autumn Leaves - Rhythmic Play Nice improv!! I still can’t do 2 on 3, let alone 3 on 4!
28. Frotz (Brian) - Notturno (Op.54 No.4) Very sophisticated sounding piece. Nice playing and recording!
29. Monica K. - Quel Che Resta Lovely piece and awesome playing! Seems like a very demanding piece yet you make it look effortless and really bring out the musicality.

41. grotrianer - La plus que lente This was a new one to me. Very enjoyable and professionally played.
42. Andy Mann - Manndrew - Time On My Hands I liked this selection. It is “simple” in a way, yet has some very nicely “jazzed up” sections. Another truly professional sounding recording.
43. Yamaha G3 & P-80 Mike White - Military Polonaise Op 40. No. 1 Great job on a difficult piece. Great accomplishment!
44. Euan Morrison - I'm Going to Make a Cake So far, I like Glass. And it’s thanks to your playing that I have this first impression. Thanks.
45. joangolfing - Italian Concerto (Presto movement) A very complex piece indeed. I can see how this could go faster, but twice as fast! Your diligence and dedication are certainly paying off.
46. bluekeys - Invention #4 Very well played. I’ve tried some of the easier Bach pieces myself, and found that getting the ornamentation right is often the biggest challenge.
47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine I must agree with the other comments made here; I think this is your best recording yet! Great feeling, flow and dynamics. John Frank and New Age; who would have thought?
48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless I used to play this on the guitar. Yours has an ever so slightly different rhythm to it that I found to be a nice touch.
50. GregF - Sleeping Through September I loved the nice full sound you got in this recording. Great job!
51. ShiroKuro - While the Trees Sleep Beautifully played and with great feeling. Welcome back.
52. EJR (Elwyn) - "Ich ruf', zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" [I call on Thee, Lord] BWV 639 From my own listening (not playing) experience, I’ve found that a lot of Bach’s organ work just doesn’t (or isn’t) transcribed well for the piano. You recording is one of the exceptions. Well played.
53. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Tooi hi no Kizuato Great feeling of movement and flow. A joy to listen to.
54. MaryBee - Reverie You did a fine job of maintaining that unique Debussy sound. Congratulations on your discovery of what a good teacher can bring to the mix.
55. Musictuary - In The Groove Loved listening to this piece. It brought a smile to my face.
56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4. That was a fun piece and I can see how would fit in well around Halloween (but is not limited to that time of year). I liked the call and response nature of it and their variations.
57. ddh - Daniel - Polskie Drogi (Polish Roads) Wonderful recording and played with great feeling.
58. Serge88 - Greensleeves I didn’t know David Nevue wrote Greensleeves. That guy really gets around. (just kidding) Terrific playing of this beautifully arranged version.
59. LisztAddict - Praeludium BWV 999 in C minor Superbly played. I loved the swell and ebb of the piece.
60. Larry Larson - atmosphere Strong piece. The beginning had a “Slaughter on Fifth Avenue” sort of feel to it.
61. TTigg / Steve C - Glasgow Love Theme Bravo TTigg! That sounded great and the “string accompaniment” was a nice touch.
62. steveMac - Prelude Op. 28 No. 7 Six months and you’re playing Chopin Preludes! Fine job.
63. DragonPianoPlayer - Prelude in E Minor (Op 28 No 4) Sounding good. Nothing is ever easy with Chopin. Nice job.
64. Mark... - Sarabande This is a very sweet piece and you played it wonderfully.
65. Jordy - A Brighter Day Brilliant composition. Enjoyable to listen to and well played.
66. AnthonyB - Exit How appropriate that your recording of “Exit” appeared as the final piece in the recital. You bring a fantastic amount of feeling into your playing and it makes the piece all the more fun and exciting to listen to.
A big thanks to Monica, Mahlzeit, and all who helped bring this recital together as well as to everyone who participated.

Some more comments...
11. flyingfroggy - Nocturne #20 in C# minor (posth.) All of your "red dot syndrome" paid off with a great performance.
13. HomeInMyShoes (HIMS, Homey, Home, Aaron) - Trois Gnossiennes I haven't heard this before. Really nice--both the piece and your playing, of course. I especially liked the first of the three.
14. Kalai1/Chris - Leo O Kapo (voice of the night) Wow! I think it's great! Love the way you make individual notes jump out from the rest.
15. Mar_red - Stranger in Paradise & Love Letters (medley) I like your take on these songs and how you created the medley. The jazz scat tone fit nicely as well.
16. Sandy Moore - Hills of Purple Heather I really enjoyed this simple piece.
17. b528nf7 (Bill) - Layla Before I started playing piano I had no idea how much talent people who can play and sing have. Well done!

32. Eighty8 - The Summer Knows Nicely done. A tape deck, you say?
33. ten left thumbs - Clair de Lune I think you've done it justice. This is the first time I've listened to the entire piece--very nice.
34. pianonewb - God on the Mountain 9 months--wow! Envious of anyone who can play and sing at the same time. Who am I kidding? I envious of anyone who can sing :-).
35. Jillian - Morning Prelude Well done! Another first-time pedal player!
36. Always Wanted to Play Piano - Sonatina Op.36 No.1 in C major - 1: Spritoso Hey, I know that piece! I understand trying something that's a stretch. Good job.

38. 1WeekPlayer - Minuet in F major BWV Anh 113 (Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach) I enjoyed this piece. Thank you

44. Euan Morrison - I'm Going to Make a Cake I haven't heard Philip Glass in quite a while. I enjoyed your playing--very smooth and melodic.
45. joangolfing - Italian Concerto (Presto movement) Way way way above my ability to comment, other than that I enjoyed your playing :-)
46. bluekeys - Invention #4 Nice playing. Isn't it amazing how motivating a recital can be to improve your playing?
47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine You definitely captured the essential beauty and emotional essence. Thanks for sharing.
48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless Thanks for sharing--I enjoyed it.
49. Undone - Theme from “The Unfinished Symphony” Nice piece--especially your dynamics.

51. ShiroKuro - While the Trees Sleep What a beautiful piece. I hope I can play like that some day.

64. Mark... - Sarabande Nice playing, and nice piano. Thanks for sharing.
65. Jordy - A Brighter Day Very melodic composition! I really enjoyed this.
66. AnthonyB - Exit There's something appropriate about the last piece in the recital being called "Exit" :-) And the last composer is Ludovico Einaudi. I wonder if Monica had anything to do with that :-) Beautiful piece, beautiful playing. Thanks for sharing!
Hey, I'm done! Thanks to everyone for sharing! This has been very motivating, both the comments I received, and hearing so many other adult beginners playing beautiful pieces.

Thanks Glen. Yeah I agree it's nice to see people attached to the hands but am "digging" the normal what can only be described as magic hands - SC

30. Copper - Air Not familiar with the book or piece. As short as this piece is, to me it really seems to say a lot musically, which I’m guessing is the intent. Nicely played!
31. jotur/Cathy Turner - Sentimental Journey Love it! Really had me groovin’. I bet this is a blast to play!
32. Eighty8 - The Summer Knows Oh, so bitter sweet! I’m sucker for these types of pieces. Nice playing and recording!
33. ten left thumbs - Clair de Lune I love this piece! Nice playing and recording!
34. pianonewb - God on the Mountain 9 months!! Outstanding! Great playing and singing!

36. Always Wanted to Play Piano - Sonatina Op.36 No.1 in C major - 1: Spritoso Nice playing! There’s no way I would be able to pull this piece off right now.
37. mahlzeit - "Up" Theme WOW! Great job with the arrangement and playing. And the Ivory sounds amazing!
38. 1WeekPlayer - Minuet in F major BWV Anh 113 (Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach) Nice playing. You are doing great for only 1 year.
39. Piano Again - Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major, Well-Tempered Clavier Book I Holy smokes! That was awesome!
40. CMohr - Mazurka op.67 no. 3 Nicely played! Playing Chopin after only 3 months back to lessons is no small feat!
41. grotrianer - La plus que lente Nicely played! Debussy’s works are in my category of, “I wish I could play some day”.
42. Andy Mann - Manndrew - Time On My Hands Nicely played! I am not too familiar with the standards (even though I studied jazz theory for 1 year) but this piece makes me want to jump back in!

43. Yamaha G3 & P-80 Mike White - Military Polonaise Op 40. No. 1 Well done! If this is above your head, I’d say you stayed afloat quite well. And the Yamaha sounds pristine!
44. Euan Morrison - I'm Going to Make a Cake (all my feedback is non-technical) Great playing and recording! The Galaxy sounds beautiful. I love these type of pieces. Thanks for turning me on to something new.
45. joangolfing - Italian Concerto (Presto movement) This sounds challenging enough at the tempo you played, I can’t imagine it more than double. Well done!
46. bluekeys - Invention #4 Nice playing and recording! That LH trill sounds very menacing!
47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine Nicely played! Such a beautiful piece (and playing). Great dynamics. I am not familiar with the original, however, this “simplified” arrangement sounds all but simple!
48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless Such a heartfelt piece. It really brings back memories of my adolescences watching M.A.S.H. Great playing and recording! FWIW, I lost count of how many times I failed to record a great take, it’s as if the Red Dot mocks.
49. Undone - Theme from “The Unfinished Symphony” Well done! Sounds like a blast to play. At 1 year 10 months, it’s obvious you have practiced very diligently.
50. GregF - Sleeping Through September Very nice piece and playing! And despite the blips, IMHO the recording is pretty amazing for an iPod.
51. ShiroKuro - While the Trees Sleep I love this piece (it’s on my hope to learn in the near future list), and you sure do it justice! I can only imagine how much you miss your piano, I remember the beautiful pics you posted of her before heading to the US.

Was traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday, so I had a chance to start listening seriously to the recital pieces. Here is the start of my comments (sorry, I can't give any technical feedback):
02. dannylux / Mel - Bersagliera really enjoyed this one. I wanted to dance to it -- you had my feet tapping
03. epf - Prelude No. 16 in Db Major so sweet and gentle. I think I'd like to play this one.
04. Ode2Joy - Piano Sonata in C, K330 Andante cantabile (2nd movement) nice playing. I'm a Mozart fan too!
05. Ken. - German Dance in A Major, WoO.13, No. 11 wow -- only your second piece?! It sounds good on your spinet.
06. Mr Super-Hunky - Cristofori's Dream I like the pauses and changes in tempo. I also really like the almost music box effect in the beginning, then how it builds up to that full sound later.
07. TrueBeginner - Autumn River took me away to a lazy afternoon canoeing on the Cuyahoga River. Thanks!
08. Peyton - Nocturne in Bflat Minor Op.9.1 How romantic! I can see why you fell in love with this. Having just heard it for the first time, I think I at least have a crush on it. I'm glad you relearned it.
09. Sam Smith - Song Without Words, Opus 19/4 I especially like the beginning and ending of this piece. (I listened to it while I was in Georgia over Thanksgiving.)
10. kokomo61 - Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 Adagio Cantabile I like your playing and I really like Beethoven.
11. flyingfroggy - Nocturne #20 in C# minor (posth.) ah...I'm starting to see why people like Chopin.
12. Glen R. - Waltz (Op. 39, No. 15) six months?! great! I like the melody and enjoyed listening to this.
13. HomeInMyShoes (HIMS, Homey, Home, Aaron) - Trois Gnossiennes Never heard of Satie before. Thanks for the introduction.
14. Kalai1/Chris - Leo O Kapo (voice of the night) I do like your music. Thanks for sharing it. So you don't read music at all?
15. Mar_red - Stranger in Paradise & Love Letters (medley) Oh, so that's Stranger in Paradise! I recognize the melody. Thanks for the background info on the music you chose. I like your style. And the ending was surprising and fun, although I don't know if it really went with the rest of your piece.
16. Sandy Moore - Hills of Purple Heather gives me a feeling of longing. Brigadoon, anyone?
17. b528nf7 (Bill) - Layla vocals -- impressive! Interesting choice on the harpsichord. I think it works.
18. Todd Vance - Sonatina (Clementi, Op. 56 No. 3) very pleasant to listen to. I enjoy Clementi.
19. Bunneh - PremiËre GymnopÈdie Oh! I guess I do know Satie (see comments on #13). I used to play this on the flute, with my husband accompanying on guitar. It's nice on the piano.
(more to follow later)
