Does anyone know if Kawai charges sales tax on orders to states other than CA.?

Kawai doesn't charge sales tax. The retailer does.

You'll pay the sales tax ...
If you live in the same state as the retailer.
or
If the retailer is in another state, but they also have retail stores in your state.

I'm talking about if you order straight from Kawai on their website.

Sales tax is collected.

This is how I understand it. The
Kawai online store is apparently not an
online store in the regular sense.
This seems to be an online
expediting-type service called
Shopatron, which has agreements
with Kawai and various online
stores that sell Kawai digital pianos.
These digitals are then posted
on the Kawai website for sale,
and if you order them, Shopatron
arranges for the online store
to ship them to you.

The rules for sales tax apparently
are different in this kind
of arrangement than in the
case where you were actually
buying from an online store that
Kawai had set up. In such
a case, the online store would apparently
be in Calif., and then sales
taxes would apparently be collected from
Calif. residents and from residents
in other states that have agreements
with Calif. to collect sales
taxes from residents in their
states.

With an online expediting-type
service, the sales tax rules
are apparently different. Here
there is no one set location for
the online store, and the company
that is actually shipping the Kawai
digital to you could be one of
several in different states. And
so the rule is apparently that
if the warehouse that the piano
is shipped from is in your
state, then you are charged sales
tax, otherwise not. The chances
of this happening are in your
favor apparently, because there
would be only about a 1 in 49 percent
chance that the warehouse would
be in your state.
