I've been searching for a suitable piano lamp for a long time, having tried at least 5 or 6 of them, either ordering online or purchasing locally, and then returning most of them for various reasons; I've even tried different bulbs of varying light quality.

I finally have as near perfect a grand piano lamp as possible, at least for now. It's flexible at three joints, has a 14" long shade with 6 LED bulbs, is dimmable, and has a wide, sturdy base. At night, I use it in conjunction with a halogen floor lamp that shines toward the ceiling, but the table lamp provides sufficient lighting during the day with the natural lighting from outdoors.

I just wanted to share with those of you hunting for a new lamp.

Z-Bar Lamp

P.S. I'm not affiliated with the company in any way.

I like the idea of LED bulbs. I've never understood the proliferation of tube type bulbs with filaments that vibrate in sympathy with the piano! How annoying!

Did you get the daylight or warm light bulbs?

I think I like the floor lamp version also. I'm going to add that lamp to my wish list.

AdagioM,

I got the warm light bulb version.

I called the company to inquire about the warm vs. daylight, explaining my use as a grand piano lamp, and that the natural daylight lamps I've used in the past are a bit "too white"; my eyes seem to be very sensitive to the glare (for a couple of years now, I've been duplicating my pieces onto off-white copy paper, unless of course I have the wonderful Henle edition!) \:D The gentleman I spoke to said that some people do find the daylight version to be "too white" but others love it.

I love being able to adjust the brightness as necessary.

I know nothing about you but you could try cutting back on the amount of carbs you take in during the day and add more protein. Your eyes and brain run on glucose. If you have an imbalance in your glucose levels it could make your eyes sensitive to light......and carbs, although they create energy, can really mess with your glucose levels.

I love daylight bulbs, I find I can focus better, and it makes reading easier.

This looks like one great lamp! Have never like fluorescent lamps and incandescent vibrate sympathetically, but here is a great solution. I'm wondering if the floor lamp version can be properly centered over the music rack.

Sleepingcats - Obviously I'm behind the times here. When did you get a Shigeru? Last I heard you had sold your Fandrich and were living with an upright.

My piano lamps have a certain subtle "je ne sais quoi" about them.

They add welcome light to the instrument without overpowering or taking away from the aesthetic beauty of the instrument.

Wouldn't you agree?

Seriously, I like your choice.

It's been a year since you posted this but I wanted to thank you for bringing this up - I've been in the same situation, not happy with anything I'd seen and just getting by. I ordered one immediately after seeing this. Nice lamp, well made, base fits well on a grand, lamp bar positions properly, base is solid but not too heavy, plenty of light output and good color temp for my eyes (daylight), looks great. Not cheap but priced fairly, less than many traditional piano lamps. Many thanks.

You're welcome, Baroque.

I'm still using mine. I agree it was expensive, but worth it in the long run since I've never had to look for something better.

Did anyone ever try this in the floor lamp model? Did it work well for a grand? I'm having a terrible time finding exactly what I want. This one sounds promising.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

My lamp solution is a large torchiere at the bass side of the piano, and behind me. My piano is about 15" away from an (interior) wall and under and 8' ceiling, so the light from the torchiere reflects nicely, right onto the keyboard and music desk with minimal shadow. I'm rather averse to putting anything other than music on my piano. smile

I've been looking into this lamp. Checked out the specs. Wondering if the base (9" diameter) is too big for the music desk on a grand. Do you guys put something between the lamp base and the music desk? Just wondering...

I think your lamps has some great feature like as you said that it has three or four band so it is easy to adjust according your desk. Nice choice.

I have seen the Z-Bar lamps at my local DIY for a year now and have often thought of them for my piano. Sleepingcats, where do you place the lamp? Next to the music desk? I play with the lid up, so have limited space for the lamp. I have also thought about the floor version, but am not sure the arms would be long enough to reach over to the music desk. And all those wires... frown

Sorry for the delay in replying to the questions - I only saw this revived thread this morning. I still love this lamp and am using it. Hope the attached photos help.

The 9" base is too wide for left side of my desk; however, I built up the area with 3/8" thickness of material which I cut to match the shape. I have a piece of cardboard (more like very thick cardstock because it's not corrugated), and several layers of the red wool fabric to hide the cardboard. Now the space is leveled out for the lamp base.

I've never tried the floor lamp version - I think the arm would have to be outstretched too far resulting in instability, or the lamp would have to be so close to the piano that it would be in the way; I'm happy with the tabletop version. I can place my metronome, eraser, or other small items on the base of the lamp so the space isn't a total waste, and it doesn't interfere with opening/closing of the piano lid.

Since incandescent filament bulbs are evacuated and sound waves don't propagate in a vacuum, I suspect it's the whole bulb/lamp assembly that's vibrating with the piano case. That will probably happen with any lamp that sits on the piano.

Best regards,

Best regards,

Incandescent bulbs typically contain an argon [edit] (or other inert gas) atmosphere.
