... don't mix. My wife had the carpets cleaned today, and boy is it humid in here. The piano sounds OK, but I'm starting to hear some incipient double striking. Hopefully things will return to normal tomorrow, and if not, we're only a couple of weeks away from a tuning anyway. cool

I'd wait at least three weeks after the humidity dies down before doing the tuning. Your piano will still be adjusting during that time, so if you tune sooner, you may be wasting money.

Pianos generally take about three weeks to adjust to a new environment (temperature/humidity). It's going to react to the humidity, and then again after the humidity comes down. Give it time.

I agree. It will take a while for the humidity to go back to normal again.

CY, I just had a customer tell me that carpet cleaning does not increase the humidity in HER home. I said, yes it does. Not mine, she said... I disagreed with her again because it indeed does increase the humidity A LOT.

When I found out that she was having the carpeting cleaned on the same morning as I was scheduled to tune her piano, I refused to tune the piano. Not to mention the fact that I did not care to have wet feet for the rest of the day in 25 degree weather. Guess what? She decided to call someone else. Go figure...

I had my carpets cleaned yesterday too. The humidity rose 15%. Last night the temperature dropped 20 degrees. With the extra heating, the RH is now back to where it was before the cleaning. I am hoping that relatively short time it was elevated will not affect the pianos since my tech will be in town for the next two weeks and I wanted them tuned while he was here.

I choose my battles these days, and that was one I gave up. The carpets are rolled up in the garage now. Apparently, the leather couches help the room acoustics enough... and they don't accuse me, "Shouldn't you be breaking your back steam-cleaning me?"

No. The big armchair says, "Wouldn't you like to relax in my arms, with a good book and a dog snuggled up next to you?"

Yeah, baby, yeah...
