Hi everybody,

I am a 24-year-old who started playing the piano when I was about 5. This year I have not had access to a piano (the piano I played belongs to my parents) and I am really missing it. So I thought I'd make the move and buy my own piano. I will be inheriting my parents' piano one day so I figured I may as well get myself a digital piano rather than an acoustic one. It makes more sense as it is easier to move and doesn't require tuning. What I am after is a good quality digital piano that is as close in sound and feel to a real acoustic piano as possible. I am not terribly interested in all the gidgets and gadgets that make digital pianos more like keyboards, although they are a bonus to add to the fun.

My problem, however, is this: there are so many digital pianos out there that I am baffled by choice! I have narrowed my choice down to two brands, Yamaha and Roland, and am more inclined towards the Roland purely because they seem to have more functions at similar prices to the Yamahas. I also live in a small city in New Zealand and am therefore unable to test all of the models myself.

I have been doing a lot of research online and read a lot of the forums on this site and have come to the conclusion that the Roland HP-203 might be a good choice. However, it has come to my attention that the HP-207 might be a much better choice. But it is considerably more expensive than the HP-203. I can get the HP-203 for NZ$3799, and the HP-207 for NZ$4999.

My question is this: what do you people out there recommend? And, is the HP-207 really worth the extra NZ$1200? Or am I completely in the wrong boat and should go for a Yamaha or another brand? Any advice or guidance that you can offer me will be greatly appreciated!

With many thanks.

If money isn't a problem for you, deffinately go for the more expensive model, as it has many more features than the HP 203.
I just bought the HP 203, but would've gone for the HP 207 if I had the money.
Or maybe the RD 700GX, which is a bit cheaper.

The high end Rolands and the high end Yamahas have very different feel on the key action. The difference would not be subtle to someone with your experience, you'd know in 15 minutes which you like. You will have to try one of each.

same for the sound. Each company has a different philosophy and artistic taste. One is not better. I think Roland has a nicer sound and more sounds to choose from but Yamaha has a more real sound.

Roland calls their best key action "PHA II Ivory Feel keyboard with Escapement". It is worth getting whatever model of Roland has this action. I tried in on the RD700GX. You might want to look into the RD700GX. It is portable and has this action. The HP207 would be a little harder to move and would never fit into a flight case.

But at least find a Yamaha CP300 or P155 or Clavinova to try just to see if you prefer their key action or sounds. If you do like it then later decide which model Yamaha.

Regarding those two DPs, the HP207 has much better speakers (60W instead of 30W) and 4-level sampling instead of the 3-level sampling of the HP203. The HP207 also has synthetic ivory keys, which contribute to the overall feeling of playing a real piano. All these things make the HP207 a finer instrument.

I haven't had the chance of playing the HP203 yet, so I can't tell you if the difference is huge, but I've tried the HP207 and I can tell you I fell in love immediately with it! It's by far the best DP I've ever played.

This is just my opinion. Hope it helps.

Best regards.

I picked up my HP-207 three weeks ago, and for me it plays very well. My teacher has a Kawai GM-10 that I use for lessons and the difference between the two pianos is very easy for me to feel and hear. (I have been away from the piano for more than thirty years). I tried the HP-203 in the showroom and just did not like the way it looked or felt, so we went for the 207. Then today at lunch I had some free time and went to another showroom and played the Avant Grand N3. That was outstanding! If I had the extra $10k usd. I would buy it in a heartbeat! However, if you can find the extra cash, I would go for the HP-207. Sorry to ramble on, but one more thought. the HP-307 will be coming out in the next months so more than likely the prices for the HP-207 should drop. Cheers!
