I currently have the Yamaha P-155, and when I record my music and save it onto a USB Drive to put into my computer, it comes as a MIDI file. This is okay, but the sound makes the music worse. It doesn't sound real at all. I'm trying to sync this together with a video with a good quality sound. I know people on youtube are able to do this, by syncing them together, but their music sounds much better than the MIDI files that I have got. I have asked people on youtube, but they never seem to reply, so I came here. Any help? Would I need to convert them to an MP3, or some other file? Or is there another way?

Hi Josh,

MIDI files themselves are just information: what keys are pressed when, how long they are pressed, how hard, pedal info, etc. The computer then takes that info applies recorded audio sampling. Your keyboard does the same thing when you play back your recording on it, or one of the preset songs. But the piano has much better sound sampling.

In order to record what you hear on your keyboard, you'll have to record to your computer another way. You'll need a cable that plugs into the AUX OUT on the piano, and into the computer's line-in jack. Then you can record with a program like Audacity(free), and sync the .wav or mp3 with your video.

Okay thank you so much! So first I should download Audacity. Then plug into the AUX out for the piano and the USB for the computer? That's what the line-in jack is correct?

You say the sound is worse through MIDI then when you listen live through the DP's speakers? That is because midi only transfers you key presses and no sound. The sound is generated in the computer. So it seems you have a rather primitive midi tone generator on your computer. It is possible to have very, good sound generation on the computer, better then what is in the P155. ("Ivory" and "Pianoteq" are examples.) But it seems you don't have that.

You have two options, record the audio line out from your P155 as audio or find a better virtual instrument to run on the computer. If you record the audio the sound will be as good as the samples inside the P155. If you go with an upgrade the the computer's midi sound the quality can be even better than what's in the P155.

Another advantage of MIDI is that you can edit it for mistakes.

Okay thank you. So let me get this straight. Right now, I have the cable in the AUX Out port of the keyboard, and where do I put the other end of the cable? I can't seem to find the line-in jack, but I found the mic, i heard that can be the same? Also I downloaded the audacity program, but no idea how to use it, even with the manual.

I won't mind if it's a MIDI file, and I think I'm going to get the upgrade.

The mic jack will do if you don't have line-in. In Audacity, just go to edit>preferences and make sure your sound card's input is selected, and you should be good to go.

What kind if audio interface are you trying to connect? Is it the built-in audio of a notenook computer. If so first you have to figure out if the mic input is stereo or mono. (the user manual should say) These inputs are typically 3.5mm diameter. You'd need the a Y-spitter cable, two 1/4" TS to one 3.5mm TRS.

If you were to buy a USB audio interface then it will likely have 1/4" input jacks. THen you buy two cables that have 1/4 TS on each end, one left and one right channel.

The mic input can work but you have to adjust the volume on the DP way down and even then you may get into clipping. Most people figure out right quich they need a quality external interface.
