The BBC and many others love Angela Hewitt so much because she is a pianist with great sensitivity and verve. She makes the piano sing in a unique way like no other. My guess would be that *she* is not the one who doesn't understand phrasing. Perhaps you might try to focus on finding beauty in music rather than something to criticize for the sake of stroking your own ego. I understand if you don't care for Angela Hewitt's playing, but to so wistfully dismiss it is not only arrogant but also very telling of your musical ignorance. Good day.

And Good day to you too! (do I detect a bit of flag waving?) oh right. She's Canadian. I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it. I don't care if she's from Jupiter. She's a brilliant pianist. Maybe not your cup of tea, but brilliant none the less.

I'm actually not a big fan of her either, but definitely not because of her rubato.. Can't exactly pinpoint why.

While few things on this site are as much fun as disagreeing with KBK, in this case I must agree. The rubato is one thing but also, as AngelinaPogorelich says, something that's hard to pinpoint that is simply missing. I've referred to her as vanilla on other posts before - perhaps not the correct musical term but it works for me. And this particularly concerns her Bach which for me has a tiresome muzak-like quality.

One problem with criticizing someone like Hewitt is she has received considerable critical and public acclaim. So if you do so, realize you are in the minority. I don't think that's something that's ever bothered friend kbk.

I saw her a few weeks ago, in concert in San Francisco. The house was full of idiots, who didn't know any better than to pay money to go and hear her... although, funny thing, my 'neighbors' at the concert didn't seem that stupid. Another funny thing: a full house on a Tuesday night. Go figure.
My only disappointment--- because she tore that stage up--- was that she didn't play the Fazioli at this concert. But she made that Hamburg D sing all right, and I found her sense of phrasing especially pleasing.

You're not going to tell her are you? I doubt I'll need to. This will probably pop up on her google alerts.

Good grief. If you don't like Angela Hewitt's playing (or any other pianist for that matter), there's an on-off button on your radio. Use it. If you have a beef with the BBC broadcasting her performances more than you'd prefer, perhaps you should be whining to them. Last I checked, there weren't any BBC program directors on PW. All hyperbole aside, it should be okay to talk about the relative merits (conceding that we're discussing our opinions, not necessary facts set in stone) as a means of understanding music, no? In the unlikely event that Angela Hewitt comes over to my house for dinner - I promise to be polite and would be honoured if she'd play something on my humble piano. But critiquing a performers public performance whether recorded or live is absolutely fair game. An instructive example: on several occasions, Pavoratti missed notes in otherwise stellar performances at La Scala and other opera centres in Italy. For this, he was literally booed by a large segment of the audience. In contrast, I've been to concerts by lesser artists in Toronto where middling performances were received with standing ovations. To me, this means that people are consuming without thinking. So yes, I think Hewitt is given far more regard than she deserves. She is certainly accomplished but she's no genius.

Although I wouldn't be as harsh in my criticism as Keyboardklutz, I actually agree with him that Hewitt's WTC interpretation is too romantic for my taste.

Romance and sex aren't the same thing! ...although they do fit together nicely. I find Bach's music to be deeply moving but I prefer it performed a little crisper than Hewitt's interpretation which IMO has too much rubato. I had Gould's WTC (which I find sparse and sometimes his interpretation is a bit wierd) and I had Schiff's. My teacher raved about Hewitt and convinced me to add it to my collection. To her great disappointment, I was sorely disappointed in the Hewitt and still prefer the Schiff.

Jnod, No argument from this end. I understand Ms H (or any well-known performer) is not for everyone. Different strokes and all that. Personally I enjoy some things she has done but others, not so much. I also agree her performances should be open to credible & reasonable critique. I just have very little tolerance for referring to anyone's work as 'rubbish' when she has certainly accomplished more than anyone else on this particular thread. Don't care for her interpretations ? Fair enough. I might even agree. But to dismiss it as garbage says more about the critiquer (is that a word ?) than Ms H.
