I am looking for a pair of monitor. I will be using it mainly with my DP. Also I would hook it up with my computer and get some sound out from my backing-track program as well as listen to music in general. These are the model and list of prices I am choosing from. (the price is from one of the store in my country-Switzerland)

M-audio AV30 - 139.90 CHF
M-audio AV40 - 179.00 CHF
KRK Rokit5 G2 - 199.00 CHF
KRK R6 - 209.00 CHF

I am not sure if these prices are for only one speaker or a pair (hopefully for a pair!) Anyone can recommend me which to get? Please also share your story if you have experienced these monitor. I think I cannot test myself because the local shop where I live doesn't have any of these model. frown

Thank you

I think your prices for the m-audio are for a pair the KRK look to be for each speaker. I think the m-audio speakers that compare with the KRK would be the BX8a. or maybe the BX5a The others are in a different class.

You are going to have to listen yourself. Bring some music on CD that you know very well with you to the store. Bring something that features piano maybe with an orchestra too. Then listen on each speaker. Yes it will take time. Be objective and take notes on what you can and can't hear.

Your problem is that the more you listen the better your ears get and the more critical you become. You will want the better speakers which of course cost more.

Don't discount using flor standing stereo speakers. The cheap ($100 each) Polk Audio M50's that I have work as well as those 3X more expensive monitors but you will need to supply an amp. The Audiosource amp100 is about $90 does will for this use. You need a pair of accurate monitors like thrKRK or BX for mixing in a studio for for listening or piano practice stereo hifi works.

One other thing is speaker placement and how they are aimed makes a huge difference. If you back them close up against a solid wall or if you aim them at the ceiling keep them low or up are ear level. If pull them away from a wall. A hrad floor or carpet, all this really does matter.

Ntice that none of the DPs with built-in speakers place them high or do they aim them at the piano player, nor do they even aim them forward. This is not by accident. They are tryingto sell DPs and found what sounds best.

Thanks for the info. I will then go for M-audio. KRK is just too expensive. I'll look for a way to test it. Quite hard to do it in my town tho.
