We found an old Davis & Sons upright that was refurb'd by a local tech (not certified). Just what refurb means I do not know...he said if something was worn and needed to be replaced, it was. It was also refinished.

It's a big old thing, sounded pretty good and my piano player was able to play her favorite song with fewer mistakes than on the other pianos she tried (I interpret that as a better action for her small hands).

The guy's asking for $1600 + $150 to deliver. He's out of town so I have not been able to ask if there is a guarantee (but I don't put much stalk in guarantees this far out in the woods).

Previously, I rejected a "free" piano for fear that a 100 year old instrument was really just furniture waiting for the parts to fall out.

When this old instrument starts being played every day ... is it likely to fall apart?

Any thoughts on the price & probability of a happy life with the old piano?

I think you could find a newer instrument that would cost less and give you at least as happy a life for a longer time. Look for a studio upright made since WWII.
