This is very confusing... I tried out both of these pianos, and sound / feel-wise, the 223 seemed better, even with the YDP160 being better on paper.. I especially like the "brightness" control on the 223. What do you guys prefer? Thanks!

The paper "specs" are very close. The key actions are identical. If the 223 sounds better it is because of the more powerful amps and larger speakers. When you listen to a digital p[piano you are hearing speakers. The quality of the speakers really does matter.

That said, you can attach better monitor speakers to any digital piano. However good speakers are not cheap. The current 20% off deal might make the 223 more affordable to you right now.

But I bought the P155. I thought is was better than either the 223 or 160 and was cheaper then eigher of them. But I do admit the built-in speakers are the P155's weak link but mostly I play with headphones.

On paper, the YDP 160 is more modern than the YDP 223 and has more samples. In reality, the YDP 223 sounds better.
Let yourself be guided by your ears, not by technical specs.

I'll be piano shopping on Tuesday, my YPP-50 "died" on Christmas Eve. So roflcopterrr, thanks for the heads-up on the differences between the YDP-160 and the YDP-223. You are not the first to mention that you preferred the 223 over the 160. I just wonder, that if the 223 sounds a little better than the 160, it may be due to the fact that the speakers in the 223 seem to be a little larger than the ones in the 160. I checked the specs on Yamaha's website and there does seem to be a size difference between them. I'm basing this on the specs for the CLP-320 which seems to be more closely related to the 160 than the 223 is.

The 223 is Yamaha's best selling piano and even though it came out in 2002, I guess Yamaha's reasoning is "if it ain't broke (sales-wise) then don't fix it"!

Chris is "spot on" with his assessment of his P-155. It has a better keyboard than either the 160 or 223. It seems to be the one they use on the CLP-320. I just wish that Yamaha would come out with something like his P155 with a 2x20 watt speaker-amplifier combo and have a stand like the P-85 with its optional 3-pedal "bar". A P-165? Yamaha, are you listening?

As it stands though, I'll try the stuff in the Guitar Center near me and then try a regular piano store further up the highway that has Clavinovas. Wish me luck! Too bad that piano prices didn't follow prices for flat screen TV's, and I could get that CLP-380 for the price of a PX-330! LOL

Emissary, would you be able to move up to the CLP 330? I wouldn’t get a CLP320 because I don’t think it’s better than the YDP-160. You have to use the Keys for other voices that aren’t Grand Piano (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

The CLP330 is almost the same as the CLP340 (smaller speakers, non ivory keys, 3 sampling vs. 4. At our level, I don’t think these are important). For your purpose and budget, if you can get this one, it’d be great.

The HP-2xx series are probably out of the question, but take a look at some Kawai if you can. The CE200 is in the YDP price range. I have heard its key action is very good. There doesn’t seem any Kawai near me, if there are, I’d definitely give it a go.

A few prices from our “Prices Paid” threads for your reference. Missing info (Polish etc...) weren't disclose in those posts. Unfortunately, we can only use these as reference. They have gone up a lot during the last year or so. Good luck with your purchase.

Roflcopterrr, I apologize I forget to address your question.

I haven’t tried the YPD-223 yet. I have only tried the YDP-160. Of the 2, for the very reason that YDP-160 is newer, I’d get this one. I have a small living room and I don’t think I’d need all that power. I have read various posts here and everyone seems to agree that Yamaha newer samplings are better. Again, this is just me. Good luck with your purchase.

Nguyen - Thank you for all that info! I think that once I start shopping, "everything" is going to look good compared with what I had. I think that one of the reasons that prices have gone up, is that piano sales have probably fallen quite a bit, since they're not a "must-have" item for the general public and dealers have to get as much as they can, with much smaller sales volume. I can't say I blame them. But I certainly don't want to "overpay" either!!

I've found a couple of small dealers who carry Clavinovas and Roland models. Hopefully they'll have the models I want to see. I suppose I'll feel like the proverbial "kid in a candy store"! I'm leaning towards either the YDP-160 or the CLP-340. I know there's a big price difference between the two, and I guess what I'll get, depends on whether I'm feeling richer or poorer on Tuesday. I just think that no matter what I end up getting, it will further my "piano addiction" at this point!

roflcopterrr - It seems we're all in the same boat! We'd all like something better than what we have, but we're surely not in the category of the many advanced players here on the forums, who can debate the nuances of $200K acoustic pianos. gerard1000's advice rings very true! Ultimately, your fingers and ears are your best tools to make a decision ...regardless of specs. Of course, this is tempered too, by what we can afford. I think a lot of us "noobs" have "beer budgets" and "champagne and caviar dreams".

If you're not looking to buy in the next few days like I am, I'll report back and let you know what my experiences are. I need something now, you might not be in the same situation. It will be interesting to get out and do some real world shopping as all of my current knowledge is a result of the internet! LOL

Here's a couple of youtube vids that feature the YDP-160:

This kid, Paul is 100x better than me, at this point and makes the YDP-160 look pretty good!!!
