In the midst of all the online recitals for Schumann, Chopin, and Unsung Heroes, let us not forget that Beethoven's 240th birthday is in December 2010!

To celebrate this event, I propose we hold an e-cital of Beethoven's sonatas. If there is interest, I am happy to organize the event. Because his sonatas range from the fairly easy to the impossible, there should be something for everyone! To make this an inclusive event, there are no rules, except that pieces be submitted before December 15th, 2010. There can be duplicates. Single movements are acceptable.

Since I am now learning op.28 (Pastorale) I'd like set the ball rolling by putting myself down for it.

Beethoven Sonata Performers
Op. 28 (Pastorale)..........jazzyprof
Op. 78...........................Phlebas
Op. 27, no.2, 1st Mov....Carl Mc, Jnlanding
Op. 22...........................Orange Soda King
Op. 49, no. 1.................PIANO piano
Op. 10, no. 1, 2nd Mov...Inlanding
Op. 26, 2nd Mov.............Seabelle
Op. 79............................Ovaltine
Op. 14 no.2, 1st Mov......Ode2Joy

I'd like to contribute, but I've only been playing for 8 months, so there's probably no way I could get an entire sonata up to scratch by then.

Would it be alright if I contribute a single movement, such as the Scherzo & Trio from op. 26, for instance?

I'll do Opus 79 (sonata #25). Been working on the first movement on and off for a long time...hoping this will make me finish it off.

I am learning the first movement of Op. 14 No 2 right now so I'd like to play that. I want to check with my teacher first to see if she thinks I can learn and have the 2nd movement ready for public consumption by next year. I already know I don't have the chops to pull off the 3rd movement.

Thanks in advance!

jazzyprof, just to confirm, yes, I'm intending to do the entire Op.79 sonata. It's easy enough (or reputed to be so) that I think I can handle it.

I think this is a great idea, JP, and would love to participate but my plate is full and there's just too much uncertainty in the future at the moment - not the least of which is that nice new table saw my dad got me for Christmas grin

You participants will have loads of fun with these sonatas, and the rest of us will enjoy listening. thumb

Hi jazzyprof,

Can I volunteer for the third movement of Op.26, the Funeral March? I think Seabelle is doing the second mov, so hopefully we can find others for the first and fourth to complete it smile

IMPORTANT NOTICE smile
By popular request (and since we have been unable to cover all 32 sonatas) the Beethoven 240th Birthday SonataFest is being expanded to a "BeethovenFest" to include any piano works (or transcriptions) of the master!

Sign up to perform your favorite Beethoven pieces, from the Ecossaises and Fur Elise to the Hammerklavier! Duplicates are welcome.

Submissions will be accepted between December 1 and December 15, 2010. They can be mp3's or YouTube videos. Detailed submission instructions will be posted later. Let's give Beethoven a most memorable 240th birthday party!

It's pretty simple but I'll do Sonatina in G Major, (Anh.5, no.2) - both movements.

Sounds like fun! I'm a bit embarrassed to only know his most 'overplayed' pieces but I'll join in with Für Elise and Moonlight Sonata (first movement only) if you'll have me. Will need to work up some recordings but two months is plenty of time.

I'm really interested in the quality of all the pieces that are going to be played.

I think the more difficult the piece, the better the playing is going to be. Not just because the pianist must be better to be able to play it, but more because some of the 'easier' pieces are being extremely underestimated. Just listen to how Barenboim or Schiff plays Op49!

I'm struggling with the fugue from mine. With two months to go and a busy time at work, I'm starting to contemplate failure, although I'm not beaten yet. It's likely to be a bit of a dog's dinner at best though.
Hearing all these gifted young pianists playing in the Chopin competition isn't doing anything for my confidence either.

I'm not particularly confident either. I was going to learn my movement for an exam at the end of the year, but have decided not to do exam until next year, so I let my beethoven gather dust. It's not that I haven't been playing, but the wrong pieces... or instrument...

Having said that I did actually do some work on it today (Before seeing this thread!) so maybe I should go and do some more. But I am old and unco!

I happened to have Op27 No2 (moonlight) prepared for the ABF but now it seems it better fits here. Can I join in? When does submission start?

Heck, my son says he'll do the Op. 10 no. 1, third movement. He used to know it and he can resurrect it quickly. This one will probably be just audio and not video (because he'll likely be using the music smile ). If you want, you can also pull the first movement off of his Youtube page.

He has recorded the "Tempest," so that can be submitted any time.

Sure you can join in! Are you doing the entire sonata or just the first movement? Let me know and I'll add you to the list. Submissions begin December 1.

I may (or may not) be too late, but I would like to submit a recording of 'Pathetique' Mvt 2. I should be able to get one done when I go home in a few weeks, I'm sure no one would appreciate a keyboard version with several notes missing!

EDIT: to say that it would only be audio, is that alright?

Great, thanks!

Just the slow movement of Op27 No2, the Adagio sostenuto. I think it's the first part of the piece but the "No.2" above it makes me doubt,

I have been playing only for a number of months now, lessons first two months, then I had to swap out my piano, and now about 3 months practicing on my own and not yet time to pick up lessons again. So I guess I won't be playing that incredibly fast part any time soon

With great pleasure we announce that the e-cital website is now ready to accept submissions for BeethovenFest, the 240th birthday celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven. Recordings will be accepted between now and December 15. The e-cital will go live on December 16th.

Please click on this submission page and follow the instructions given.

Acceptable file format: mp3

If you have a video, upload it to YouTube and insert the url in the space provided on the submission form. Please do not upload the video here.

Be sure to answer the advanced math question on the form! This is a test question to ensure that a sentient being is making the submission (as opposed to a rampaging robot).

Looking forward to a fantastic celebration of Beethoven's 240th!

It's a bit early, but we have until the 15th, and believe me, I'll need every moment of that to get it ready. smile

I am getting timed out on my submission. The file is 13 megs. Is this too big?

I reduced the bitrate and file to 6mb but still getting the error message.

The maximum file size you can upload is 25 mb so you should be OK. The difficulties with submission could be due to network traffic. I will check with our network guru.

I got that internal server error message once last night when I clicked on the submission page. This morning I was able to get to it with no problem. It seems intermittent. Do give it another try and if it fails again we'll work out something.

Special instructions for those with YouTube videos
Since the e-cital side currently does not handle videos, you will need to convert your YouTube video to mp3.
1. Please go to http://www.vidtomp3.com/ and follow the instructions for converting video to mp3. It only takes a couple of minutes.
2. Go to the submission page and upload your mp3. Add the link to your YouTube video.

Looking forward to a great e-cital!

I haven't seen the following performers around here in months:
Seabelle
[jane]
tatiana110
dslyecix
guest1013
Oceanix

If you are around and still plan to submit a recording do please check in! We might be missing the 1st movement of the Pathetique, and all of Op. 49 and Op. 31#3.

OK, got a recording of each movement of my sonatina today. I kept getting interrupted - the phone, the kids, the kid's friends. It never stopped. I could never get a take with repeats that I liked so I'm afraid there are no repeats. Mercifully it should be the shortest recital piece going.

I'm going to give it a couple more days in case better ones emerge!

Ah, the old Performance Interruptus! It's so annoying to get 3/4 through your best playing of a piece only to have a siren sound outside, or someone walk in the back door saying, "Hi, what's for dinner!"

Hmm... I've got Für Elise in but might not make it with a Moonlight Sonata recording. I'll try and get it done but haven't been having much luck with it so far. Just a heads-up.

Yay - uploaded. I listened to it again before I submitted and after I got over the "that note's clunky, ouch, what was I doing there" I just thought, "that's pretty". Short but sweet and nevermind that there are doubts about the Sonatina in G's authenticity ..... wink

For those who seldom (or never!) visit Pianist's Corner, you might have missed that the recital is now live:

Beethoven Fest

And I'm not just posting to plug my sonatina wink

Wow, I'm listening to it right now, and I am really impressed by it. Plus, the website itself is really amazing. It's great to see how much work people on this forum are willing to put into this wonderful art form. Great job, everyone!
