I'm getting a Yamaha CP300, and was wondering what I should be looking at in terms of stands. I know Yamaha has a specific one for the CP300, but it's a bit expensive, large, and not adjustable. I was thinking about getting a Z-stand, such as this:

The range of height adjustment should be fine, as well as the weight it supports, so the main concerns I have are the width, the depth, and stability.

For width, it says it extends out to 36", and the CP300 is about 55" wide. That seems okay to me (about 10" sticking out from either side), but I'm not entirely sure.

As for depth, the Yamaha is about 18" deep, but I can't really find any info on that dimension on the stand.

Finally, I'm concerned if stands like this are wobbly, i.e. if I'm playing something forcefully on the keyboard, will the whole thing setup start shaking around?

I guess I just really want to know if this or similar stands will cut it, or if anyone has any other recommendations for similar form factor and price range.

Whare are you setting up. It is a hard surface floor that is perfectly level? Are you going to be moving it a lot.

I think the key to no-wobbles is some slack or play in the system. That is why cars have springs on the wheels, otherwise they'd be riding on only three wheels most of the time. So don't think "cheap" when there is some play in the locking mechanism

I glued some 1/8" thick neoprene foam to the top rails of an x-stand and that little bit of added play made it more stable.

I had an Ultimate Stand. The kind with the triangular column. It was good because it used the "three points of contact" rule and all the parts stored in the column for easy transport. Not good for home use as you can't push the stand up to a wall, It was designed for use on a stage.

I like the double X-stand as the most sturdy portable stand but now I have Yamaha's "LP140" stand for their p155 that attaches with screws. It's very solid.

I just set up a stand on carpet for a relative. Not good at all. I resorted to weighting the stand, 50 pounds keeps it in place now.

i actually like this stand, and would buy it myself for P155 if i need one. CP300 however is much heavier than P155, but i would guess this would still be ok.

You're doing the right thing by not getting the lame custom stand. Whatever you do don't get an 'X' stand.

I can recommend the Quik-Lok W550 stand.

The Quik-Lok M-91 is probably nice too, though I've never seen it in person.

Ive got the On-Stage KS7350, its a very sturdy, well built stand.

It's going to be on carpet. Also what's the deal with the screws? Are the stands/keyboards fairly modular in that respect, or do I have to be careful about compatibility?

I have the two tier version of this stand and it is solid as a rock. I love it.

There is no standardization with the screw holes. But I think most Yamahas have four threaded inserts in the bottom to accept four machine screws. If you did not have the custom matching stand it would not be hard to make something using hardwood blocks to clamp a generic stand. But anti-skid rubber might be all you need.

Carpet? Let's hope the setup is heavy enough to compact the carpet. The one I set up recently was not. Had to set up a board across the base of the stand an inch or so above the carpet then add some weights. Used lead to test then replaced it with bricks as I need the lead for it's intended use (scuba).

The keyboard is over 70 lbs and the carpet isn't very thick, hopefully that'll be enough, but if not, I'll figure something out.

What would be the reason for using a stand like the Quik-Lok mentioned earlier over a Z-stand?

X-stands have no legroom, you'll be constantly barking your shins on the pivot, particularly when fishing around for the pedal. Double-X-stands are even worse in this regard.

The height of many X-stands is way off standard piano keyboard height when you put your DP on them (not sure why this is so). I believe X-stands are made predominately for standing performers.

I have found X-stands to be much wobblier than good Z or 4 legged stands, and I personally consider them to be butt-ugly ironing board-like contraptions.

They fold up quickly, that's about all I can say good about them.

I'm not considering an X-stand. It's either Z or T, and I was wondering what the advantage of a T-stand is over a Z-stand.

We have a Z stand, and the bar through the middle can get in the way a bit. It is also a bit less secure and shaker than something with the legs all the way out at the ends, as you might suspect, though nowhere near as bad as a X stand. Z stands tend to be fairly deep as well, often swallowing up slimmer DPs. If you will be putting a second tier or other accessories on it that might not be too bad though. But my first choice is definitely the adjustable 4-leg type.
