Tom Lehrer - The Element Song

I am not a scientist, but do I qualify to be among the science-leaning group if I majored in mathematics? At any rate I am proud to say I earned my degree at the university where Tom Lehrer was a professor.
You all did know he is a mathematician, right?

I grew up in the area and I have a memory of someone coming to our high school to sing Existential Blues around 1979. Could it have possibly been Tom Lehrer himself?

Being weird is not exclusive to science nerds. All weirdos are welcome!

The problem with rap is not simply the lyrics, although in many cases they are hideous. Most popular lyrics are pretty bad, and are just lucky enough to have good music to distract us from their poor quality. I don't like rap because of the quality of the music itself. I disagree with people who say rap isn't music. It is music, but it isn't good music.

I have all the episodes on VHS, and will transfer them to DVD some day. We invited the cast to our wedding, and they actually RSVP'd. Bridget Jones called my wife (then fiance) to say how cool it was to be invited. We danced to the theme song (from the Joel years) at the reception.

Again, to quote Herr von Bulow, "You have no idea."

Wow. I'm kind of shocked. Op. 110 isn't just any sonata to me; it's *the* Beethoven sonata that dominated months of my high school life; it has certain moments....that felt like personal messages from Beethoven to me.....Its fugue theme permeated my subconscious and influenced that semester's compositions.....
The world, and the mind, is mysterious. And I'm generally a skeptic! Thanks guys for the discovery.....

"Wow" is right!
I was figuring this was just a remarkable coincidence, notwithstanding your having "Beethoven" in your chosen user name. But it looks like you're figuring there might have been something unconscious or subliminal going on -- and if you think so, then I do too.
BTW this is a shrink speaking. smile

P.S. Numbers often have a musical connotation or association to me, even when I'm not aware of it. (For example, I sometimes sort of "sing" phone numbers to myself, if they're singable, which most are, and often without realizing it.) Maybe to some extent that's the case for you also, and if so -- considering the significance of Op. 110 for you, it's probably likely that at some level, "31425" had a special ring for you.

I thought I was the only one that did that. smile My old work phone number used to sound like the opening to Beethoven's Violin Concerto.

I used to also type in part numbers in rhythm when I was doing data entry. They have a certain feeling to them particularly if they are in a six digit sequence.

I'm definitely one of the weird group too. I used to watch Weird Science and then much later Nova and Beyond 2000.

Maybe I missed something, but could someone please explain why "31425" = Op. 110?

I think they're intervals of the opening of the first movement. Although I think it should be 3111425. laugh

Op. 110 is in Ab major. Imagine your hand in Ab position, so your thumb corresponds to Ab; second finger to Bb; 3 to C; 4 to Db; 5 to Eb.

The opening melody of the first movement now reads: 3 1 1 1 4 2 5...

I believe it's a kitten.

I found the picture in the list of possible avatars, so I don't know where it came from.

Ah, I see. Well it sure looks like a rodent of some kind at first glance!

Very small kittens do look kind of like rodents. Like these, for example:

What the pianist acrostically said:
Each party I go to in dread!
I had much rather go
Rehearse Etude Tableaux and
Date virtual acquaintance instead.

For those who didn't get this the first time around, it's an acrostic which means (in this case) you read the first letter of each line to make a word vertically. I wanted to post it again because it took me hours (ok minutes smile ) to think up, and I don't want the effort to be wasted. And because I am weird - today I am wearing a Tshirt with a pic of impossible scrabble letters on it laugh

I would like to dedicate this verse to gooddog who has a talent for inspiring some good threads.

Edit: when I was young I remembered all phone numbers by their interval pattern, and even had a theory that the nicest ppl had the most musical phone numbers. Then I moved interstate and the numbers weren't as good. I'm sure this isn't weird!

Thanks for saying -- I'm a big fan of acrostics but still didn't get it!

Me too, and I can still remember those numbers.
BTW.....it almost always gets a laugh if you show someone how they can sing their number. ha

Also way cool was this exchange between Canonie and Ferdinand:

Very Spooky

To notice such things you have to be either weird or wired a bit differently.

Not only is wider an anagram of weird, but so is wired! O the cleverness!... smile

On behalf of Ferdinand and myself, thank you [Linked Image] (have been waiting a long time for chance to use that smiley. I hope to use it again when, one day in the distant future, I post a recording - now That is True Cleverness [Linked Image] )

And gooddog, you are welcome!
