Just when I think I got figured out which DP to buy I like the Yamaha P155 the wife throws a monkey wrench in my plans. She wants a console piano a DP that actually looks like a piano because she wants to put it in the great room. The P155 only comes with a black stand and she wants the brown or fake wood look. So here I am searching again. What console should I buy that is under $1,400? I guess I could go with the Yamaha YDP160 but is there any Casio's or other brands out there that make a better one for the same price or cheaper?

Show your wife this:

In your case the amp wouldn't be down there on the lower left, and you can probably use the music holder on the P155, both of which would make it look even cleaner.

The metal stand and bench are much sturdier than anything you can buy custom.

Is that a P155? Where can I buy a stand like that?

It's a P120, which is two generations back from the P155, but very similar (some would say too similar).

The stand thread is here:

I think the charcoal grey looks better than fake wood.
But if she really cannot be talked out of it. Then you want at LEAST a YDP223. Nothing below that. But what she is really telling you is that she wants a Yamaha Clavinova. (Of course she wants the Clavinova for the price of a P155 but that is being unreasonable.)

Tell her that her fake wood will cost an extra $800. That is really the truth. To get a P155's quality you really need the Clavinova CLP line.

There is another line of argument: Fakes have to be really, really well done to look good. A DP in a wood case looks like a "fake piano" and will never be as good as the real thing. But a digital keyboard, like say the Yamaha Motif on an X-Stand is not fake. It is what it is.

The stand for the P155 looks fine. It doesn't realy give it the black plastic look that most cheap keyboards are made of if that's what you're worried about. Also doesn't have the cheap pressboard furniture look that the consoles can get. The stand that dewster showed is at least as good and probably better sturdiness wise. Check out the link he had for that.

Amen brother, amen (except for the X-Stand).

People see your fake wood fake piano sitting there lookin' cheap and what will they think of you? To do the wood thing, to me anyway, it has to be a real piano, preferably a decent grand.

They see a professional stand with a professional stage piano on it looking all expensive, they'll think you're a family full of serious rock star types.
