Could be in terms of how many great pianists who studied with them(definitely not a requirement), major pedagogical contributions, or anyting else(good if you tell us why). Someone who you would put in the top 50 for whatever your reason.

A few obvious ones in terms of having famous pupils: Liszt, Leschetizky, R. Lhevinne, Neuhaus, Cortot, Feinberg, Venegrova.

Your choices?

Interesting question. I don't think I know too much about teachers, but I think any list of brilliant piano teachers would have to include Artur Schnabel. I've studied with a couple of Schnabel students, and they revere him as a god. Seems like anyone who studied with him or with one of his pupils has a lot to say about him, his playing, his musical aesthetic. That shows me that he had a tremendous influence on everyone who worked with him.

Back in the '80s I attended a master class with Schnabel's son - Karl Ulrich - who was also well known as a piano teacher, and was very outgoing and communicative - at least from my rememberance of that master class.

An interesting site about Mannheimer for those, like me, who may be unfamiliar with him:

I played in a masterclass in the late 80's with him. Did he show anyone the pedal trick for single note subito piano? He tried to convince me (and everyone else) that it was possible and, of course, HE could pull it off. He'd be playing and one of his legs would start jumping all over the place. I don't think he could control it, but at the time we students sure got a kick (no pun intended) out of it.

Leon Fleisher has been the Oracle for many decades. Interesting that he and Frank were both students of Artur Schnabel.

Olga Samarov, nee Hickenlooper. She taught a lot of great pianists at juilliard.
