Hello, I'm looking to buy my first DP. I think I'm going to choose the PX130 for the price. When I was searching through topics on the px130 it looked like some people had gotten it for around $400 and others reccommended not to buy it for much more than this. So far I've only seen it online for 499, where or how can I get it cheaper (not used)?

It would help if you mentioned where you are (lots of international members on this forum). Assuming you're in the states, then B&H has it right now for $429 with free shipping. Others, like Musicians Friend will occasionally either have it specifically on sale or have some type of 10%-20% off coupon or special that brings it down to or near your target $400 range. They also sometimes have refurb/blemished models for much cheaper.

Guitar Center offers to beat any price, as do others. So the trick is to Google the best price then take that to where you really want to buy it. So if B&H has it for $429 then GC will sell if for $426. But B&H is a first rate outfit so just buy it there.

Also many of the bigger retail chains will let you bargain with them and take 10 to 15% off just for the asking but there is a trick, you just don't ask. One Guitar center salesman told me his manager will always approve 10% off and some times as much as 15%. They are trained to find a customer who is on the fence about buying and then make the offer of a discount if that is what it takes to close the sale.

Awesome thanks for the advice. I have a guitar center about 45 minutes away so I may try to bargain with them. I never heard of B&H, I checked their website though and it looks like the px130 is at $499 like the other sites.

You need to add it to your cart to see the discounted price. It's always worth negotiating, in this case you have nothing to lose but whatever the shipping time is.

The google link seems to be to the "add to cart" url on the B&H site. Works out ok and avoids the above confusion.

How did you get them to come down to $385? What did you end up paying for the p85?

Many web sites, Amazon included are set up to do exactly what a good salesman would do. Tell you one price if he thinks you are motivated to buy and tell you another price if he thinks you are price shopping. Web servers can tell from which site you just came from. So direct links in from "findyour bestprice.com" or whatever link to a different price then if you browsed the site.

This way they can sell at full price to most shoppers but at the same time not loose out on a sale to someone using a search engine to hunt down a good price.

A think the scheme must be at least 10,000 years old.

B&H is one of most trustworthy on-line retailers. They have a huge brick and mortar store in down town Manhattan NYC. They were big even before the Internet.

$444 + tax & they threw in a pair of Senheiser HD201 headphones, as they matched the promotion over @ music123, which they had running for the month of Dec.

Like I mentioned in the previous post, it explicitly said that you had to add it to your cart to see the "sale" price (vs the google link that actually took you straight to the cart with the item added). Not contradicting what you said, but in this case there was nothing nefarious, underhanded, or predatorially capitalistic going on.

Again, as I mentioned before, folks like GC and MF are conststantly running specials. If you catch them at the right time, them you can get an even better price. If your timetable allows you some flexibility, then there is a reasonable chance that you'll be able to beat even the $429 price when the right sale/promotion comes along. Alternatively, you can try your negotiating skills and just trot over to your local GC and see if you can get them down to a similar price.

Why did you trade for the p-85?

It seems between the px130 and the yamaha p85, the p85 is most reccommended. I finally got a chance to go to guitar center yesterday and I was happy to see that they had both models out for playing on. So I got to mess around a bit and I had someone play a little on both of them. Now to me they sounded similar... It wasn't the best of demonstrations though, and anyone whose been to guitar center knows how noisy the background can get. It was really tough to decide, to a begginner like me they didn't seem much different. The px130 looked to have more features and a better price tag- but I was stalled by the fact that most people reccommend the p85. As for the feel, I did recognize a bit of a difference. The px130 seemed a bit heavier on the keys, while the p85 had a lighter weighted feel which felt better to me than the privia's. So after debating for a while I decided to go with the yamaha based on the feel and knowing that more people reccomended it over the casio- though I wasn't 100% sure if the extra dough was worth it. I was able to get the price down a bit to $579.99, but of course as I'm ready to buy it, turns out they don't have any in stock and I go home empty handed. Was $579.99 a good deal? I can't seem to find it anywhere under $599.

I think it was music123 that had a 20% coupon in December so apparently you could get the P85 for 480. What I'd suggest trying is to call music123 customer service and ask if they'll still honor that price. If they won't, and that's possible, I'd suggest emailing a couple of places and asking if they'd be willing to honor that price. I suppose you could also just call their customer service and see if a 'supervisor' will approve that price but i recently had better luck with emailing. A couple of places i'd also suggest trying this, customer service or email route, is Musicians friend and Same Day Music.

If you are looking for a lower price on the P85, you might be consider that Musician's Friend is planning to get some P85 factory restock to sell for $429.00. They expect to have it in stock in 17 days.

In either case, they are repaired and packaged at the factory for resale at a reduced price. Standards of quality vary from one manufacturer to the next.

(On a related note, because I am thinking about this option, I'm soliciting opinions on the quality of factory restock in this thread: Factory Restock.)

I guess you never know....it should be working ok though and I'm not sure but wouldn't you have the same return options (or are all sales final?!)...like it says it may have scratches and dents...one time i bought a classical guitar from MF and there was an ominous hole in the box when i got it and sure enough the guitar had a gouge in the top that looked like someone poked a hole through the box with a fireplace poker...so i returned it and got another of course but about a week later noticed what was probably the guitar I'd returned turned up on their 'scratch and dent' list for about 40 bucks off what i'd paid for it; and this was a major gouge not just a small dent. --I don't really like buying used stuff anyway but for such a small discount...that is if i could get it for the price i mentioned in my last post i would do that.

Their 45-day return policy applies to the factory restock as well. But I hear you on used stuff. I'm a little on the fence myself.

I don't think that I have bought anything used before so I am really nervous about trusting this but I only have about 400 dollars to spend. I think I'm going to have to wait for a better deal.

if you could swing 480 for the p85 you probably wouldn't notice the difference in a few weeks if you know what i mean. Otherwise see if someone will go for 399 on a px130....but overall i have a little more confidence in yamaha's quality.

When i emailed a few places and asked if they'd honor an expired price from a month before i said something like 'i know you may not be able to give me this price because it's on a past sale but i figured it doesn't hurt to ask!' ....and they gave me the price!

I'm going to see if I can get the December deal. Do I still need last months coupon code if I were to call or email music123 about it? And if they did honor, how do you make the order- do they send you a coupon that does work?

I can't say for sure who will or won't give you that price only that from my experience it won't be music123 since they were the ones who had the sale they'll tend to be 'no, sorry wait for the next sale...' but i could be wrong so like i said it won't hurt to try. i had luck trying a couple of other places; I'll suggest you try musicians friend and same day music but again no guarantee just passing on what i did. ---yes, well they sent me an ok by email and basically a link that was good for a few days to get that price.
