My friend's mom is selling her 1974 Kranich and Bach Baby Grand for $500. She is moving to an assisted living and doesn't have the space. I can't find much info on that brand. I have seen it referred to as an "odd duck". Does anyone have insight about this brand piano? This piano has remained in the same location/house since it was purchased new in 1974. I am looking for a piano just to teach my kids. They are 8,6,and twin 4 yr olds. Any thoughts?

I would do a search for Kranich and Bach on this forum. There are several extensive threads. When it comes right down to it, that particular piano should be judged on its own merrits. Do you play the piano? The reason I ask is that people sometimes make the mistake of buying their kids a piano thinking any old piano will do. Your kids will have a much harder time learning to play the piano if their home piano is severly sub-standard.

I recently bought an older Kawai piano from a "little old lady" and it turned out to be an outstanding instrument that had almost no wear and tear. On the other hand, if the piano has been parked near a heat vent for the last 30+ years it could be a total disaster. The actual condition will most likely be between those two extremes.

Structurally the original Kranich & Bach grands(non Asian stencil) were of decent build quality. The major issue is their proprietory action parts which unfortunately I believe are not available. Nobody manufactures these aftermarket parts so...therefore in lieu of rebuilding the action, one has to actually restore the original action parts or redesign it's action geometry with aftermarket universal available action parts. A major task to say the least. Is it worth it ? Probaby not!
It might be a good cheap project piano for someone with alot of extra time on their hands. wink
