quick question here:

just wondering what i need to do to record my keyboard direct to my camera when i'm making videos. i had been using just the mic in the camera but i'm looking to enhance the sound a bit.

If possible, take the audio from the DP's line out (or headphone) jack and plug it into the line in on your camera.

If the camera does not allow an external audio source, you will probably need to record the audio separately (e.g. using a computer), then recompile the audio and video tracks together in software.

Cheers,
James

So I guess you are trying to go from the keyboard into the camera. The title line seems to say the opposite. I was trying to figure out why someone would want to go from a camera recording into a keyboard. The other way makes much more sense.

I wonder how you would sync up the direct sound track audio with the video so they don't drift out of sync? Is there some kind of sound tracks you have to lay on both sides? Like SMPTE but maybe simpler that doesn't require expensive sync equipment?

Well, if you were using a video editing package, you could just add the clean audio as a separate audio track, line the waveform up (visually) with the source audio, then once you're satisfied that everything is in sync, resave the video with just the new audio.

There are sync techniques but the cameras and recorders are very expensive. Although I have the gear, I usually do exactly what James described instead. I use Sony Vegas but most video editors that allow adding a soundtrack and displaying their waveforms work just as well.

Well, is there such a program that I might download for free?
I'm also looking for a solution for this.

iMovie comes for "free" on all Macs. I've seen a WinMovie app or something like this on Windows in the past.

This is an old problem that was solved 80 years ago. Ever seen a "clap board?" One can be improvised simply by tapping the top of a table with the hand or by clapping both hands at the stat of the shoot. Of course you edit this out later.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapperboard

Modern digital recorders either stand alone or computer based are very good with time and will keep an accurate rate to within a few parts per million.

There should never be a reason to use a microphone on a digital piano.
