Dear all,

I am currently in ABRSM Grade 2, taking exams. I have an acoustic piano. But for some reasons I need a portable and silent solution. Hence, I am looking at digital pianos.

Out of the 3 choices here, which would you think is the best option? Thanks!

1. CASIO CDP-100
2. KORG SP-250
3. YAMAHA P85

I would rule out the CDP 100, becouse it's pretty old and not that good IMO.
The Yamaha P-85 has a VERY light keyboard, which might be a bit of a bother, considdering you're playing an acoustic.
The SP-250 has a very good keyboard, in fact, the best in the pricerange IMO, but some don't like the sound.

I found the Korg to feel the best to my fingers/style of play. It's got their latest "RH3" action, which is quite realistic, and allows for very fast repetition of key strikes. The Yamaha uses a "next model down" graded hammer action in Yamaha's hierarchy ("GH" vs. "GH3"). I don't know what the specific differences are in the mechanics of those two systems. I know the GH3 has an additional sensor that allows for fast repeats like the Korg's RH3. I played both the Korg SP-250 and Yamaha P-85 when looking around last month, and both boards were more than adequate for my ability to hit keys repeatedly.

I played some Casios--don't recall the model numbers--but they felt very plasticky and cheap compared to the Korg and Yamaha.

Sound is subjective. Both had very good sound; my preference went towards Korg's. I ended up ordering the Korg LP-350, which is the "big brother" to the SP-250--essentially the exact same board in a much-less-portable cabinet. Its advantage over the SP-250 (beyond aesthetics) is that it comes with three pedals (soft, sustenuto, damper) as opposed to just one.

Later,

K

P85 uses GHS.

Bihua,

Instead of casio CDP-100 I would consider the Privia line px-130 or px-330 which are quite portable if you compare their weight.

Casio Privia PX-130 + VST = quite close to the real thing.

Thanks for the inputs. Korg SP350 is not available in Singapore, or maybe I don't know where I can find it. But having tried all the 3 digital pianos, I also feel that Korg is the best, but I have to make do with one pedal, though I do use the una corda pedal once in a blue moon.

The Casio PX130 here is a few hundreds more expensive than Korg SP-250, so not in my consideration list.

I will go for Korg SP250. Thanks! =)

^KORG LP350, not SP350.
Also, I think you should be able to plug in another pedal. You'd have to get a MIDI one tho.
