Hi Everyone,

I am new to the site. I am a 30 yo, husband and father of two. I have always wanted to learn to play the piano, but with work and family, no time or money for lessons. So, I am teaching myself. I have read sheet music for years (HS Choir), so it is going pretty well with the book I have.

I don't ever intend to be a concert pianist. I would just like to be able to play some of my favorite pop songs for my own enjoyment.

Right now I am working through my book, and playing some easy to moderate sheet music I have to build my coordination, fingering, etc. I would eventually like to be able to play medium difficulty popular music from sheet music or by ear.

Having said all that, I would be interested in any opinions/suggestions on continuing.

Thanks,
Chris

Welcome Chris!
You're in the right place, here. I don't know if you're interested in playing from lead sheets or not, but if you are, you might want to take a stroll through the Jazz Study Group thread cool here on the ABF forum. There's also the non-classical forum you might want to check out. Tons of information there and here.
This is a wonderful site - hope you enjoy and learn alot! smile

Welcome to the forum, Chris. smile You'll have a nice head start on piano with your music-reading ability from chorus. For learning how to play by ear, there are many people on the forum who have done well with Piano Magic (an internet course); you might want to browse the archives here or check out the piano magic website. I've been very impressed with what the piano magic folks have been able to do and play. It's not free, but it's reasonably priced and self-paced.

Thanks very much. I appreciate the for the tips. Just googled and found a bunch of lead sheets. Hadn't really considered them before. Want to eventually be able to play the full songs, but they look like a great way to practice and learn more chords. It is also motivating to get away from chilren's and christmas music to something a little more interesting, but still at my level.
