Steve,

My cousin is a nurse. One time, many years ago, she told me while she was on an elevator with a corpse, it sat up by itself. Apparently, the muscles in the tummy tighten or contract or something by themselves? They are cut in caskets to avoid that I was told. Scared the CRAP out of her cause she was alone she said.

My dad tuned in a funeral home at night before, all alone. NOT ME! There are some things I won't do and that's one of them!

Afraid that some partials might start ghosting all by themselves, Jerry?

I think this is a great post, it lives forever, and is a chance for all to vent!
Today I did a concert tuning at a college for a little 7 ft. Boston, not my favorite piano, any comments on that brand?
This one is coming into 2nd year and already needs voicing. The treble is god-awful,... don't know why the concert person didn't choose our D which is lovely... SM

# 4 today was Baldwin 243 # 278801. The Customer said it's been 10 years since the last tuning. Could have fooled me, I thought as I measured only 5-7 cents flat across the treble, and 3 flat in the bass. The aural overpull on a model I've tuned 1000 times before was smooth. Pins felt great. Strings rendered well. Tone and action was fantastic. Finished in an hour, including a dust vac.

To the people who built Baldwin 243 # 278801.......nice job!

I like Bostons ok, but I think they are nothing spectacular. In fact, for less money, I prefer equivalent sized Kawais (who make the Boston).

The local H.S. bought a 7ft Boston two years ago and has been under the general care of the dealer. I have tuned it some, though. Very tight and springy pins with unpredictable rendering. You have to really work at it to make it stable. It is not very bright and is nice for solo or choral accompaniment, but for musicals and general use the beat-up 70's R is the go-to instrument. It cuts like a knife. (This actually works out as the R is on the floor while the Boston is on the stage. The aisles are not wide enough to switch them without putting them up on their sides. So they have a pit piano and a stage piano.) The Boston has the typical false beats of most pianos in the high treble. And there is a marked increase in the amount of "hiss" where the front scale changes. I can it hear from the audience. I think the dealer’s service contract is about done and I will probably take over the care of it. More than anything it needs to be broken in.

Today I went to prison to work on 2 uprights. A Yamaha P22 that needed some strings and a Suzuki studio that needed 1 bass string and tuning. The Suzuki was really a bad piano, and its the only one i've ever seen. I wonder if they are all that bad..??

Tuned a Young Chang grand about 6' something that had never been tuned in 15-20 years. Raised it about 1/2 tone to 440.

Tuned a Kawai console, 505 F. Strange. The tuning sounded like somebody was practicing on it. One note might be 443 while the very next note might be 432! The whole piano was like this. No rhyme or reason to it whatsoever. It tuned fine though.

Tuned an Everett studio about 50 years old.

Tuned a Kawai studio UST-8.

Appraised an old Aschen upright. I think that's the right name, I forgot to write it down. Piano was shot. Case was all beat up, hammers shot, flanges shot, bass wires shot, loose tuning pins, built in 1901.

The Suzukis' scale broke the laws of physics.

Love this post! We have returned recently from MTs of NC, and after playing catch up yesterday, I tuned a Kimball console this morning,.... sadly complete with rust on strings & tuning pins... also suspect bridge problems.
Good grief! Why don't these people pay a tech to check it out before they buy and move a piano, and pay a small fortune for....??

Spent half the day in a Toyota dealership waiting room as my SUV breaks were healed. Went home and scheduled 3 days of work and into next week. 8 per day the next 3.

Gotta pay for the dealership repairs Sam! Only one way to do that! tiki

Did 6 today. A Yamaha console, a Kawai console, both tuned 1 year and 2 years ago respectively. Tuned a 7' something Schimmel grand, another Kawai console, a crappy little Weber grand and then tonight at 7:30, went to do a concert tuning.

smile

Thanks SM, I try but, this time of year I start getting swamped and tend to work harder than I should although, I admit, I am not tuning as many pianos as I used to tune, by choice of course. There are those times where I must tune more in order to complete the venue/s on time. So, I do what I have to do and don't when I can get away with it! grin It all comes out in the wash.
