Timeline of genres, and what are the differences?

Hi,
I'd like to know; everytime i'm reading things like "Blues came from gospel and worksongs", "RnB came from Blues, Gospel and Jazz", "Soul came from Gospel and RnB", etc.
But I'm just curious. Does anyone know if there is some sort of timeline of music styles, which extensively shows which genres came from which genres and such? If there is something like that, i'd like to learn what than really separates these genres. E.g. if RnB came from blues, what's the real differences? Is it syncopation? Is it progressions? Is it scales? Is it the omission of a chorus, and so on.
Don't know if i'm really clear about my question, would just like to learn some more about genres, history and differences (between genres and time).

There is a series on jazz history that starts with the beginnings in New Orleans and goes up to the mid 1900's that does just that. There are about 110 ten minute clips: I lost a whole night watching them. You see groups coming in who brought in their own backgrounds and changed the music, or individuals who developed new things that everybody adopted. It gets into some of the technical things as well that you mentioned. Don't know if I can find it again.

Found it by googling "jazz history". Here's one episode, with some of the others seen in a side bar. Caution: you might lose a whole day and have your meals in front of the computer while mumbling monosyllabically at interruptions. one of the episodes Just had a second look at your title. I first thought it was the same thing: All That Jazz : From New Orleans to New York 110 min., color/b&w, mono. Documentary about the early years of jazz with little (if any) live material included Since the one I found has 111 segments, each about 10 min. long then we must have around ten times as many minutes, plus it has a lot of live material. My mom thought she had watched it as a documentary on t.v. some time ago.
