By chance I came across A P Wyman an American composer of the late 1800's. Several of his pieces are very lyrical and typical of late Victorian piano music.

Silvery Waves is played on youtube mainly by people from Asia, I wonder if it's taught there as it's mainly young people playing.

Any Americans who have any more information about him ? It would be nice to have a list of all his published compositions.
I've managed to get several other pieces of his from The National Library of Australia and The Library of Congress, which only had a simplified version of Silvery Waves.
David.

I'm from Asia originally, and--yes--Silvery Waves is very popular there. It's frequently anthologized. Wyman was a violin teacher in the United States, but he also composed. I liked his Silvery Waves, but also Woodland Echoes. Unfortunately, their popularity waned in the US.

Woodland Echoes is such a pretty piece and a lot easier than Silvery Waves.
Thanks for the link, it's from there that I've downloaded quite a collection, but surprising that they don't have Silvery Waves except for 4 hands.
Always seems sad that so many composers of light music of that time have fallen from fashion.
I'm mainly a classical lover, but I also love piano music from this period, there is such a huge range to choose from.

I'll have to find this piece and read it. My middle name is Wyman, and we are all related, in one way or another, to a John Wyman who came to New England in the 17th century.

The National Library of Australia has a huge digitized collection of old music free to download.
Here's the silvery waves page.

I can't remember where I got Woodland Echoes from, but if you PM me I will send you the PDF file. The Library of congress only has Woodland Echoes for 4 hands.

Another pretty piece is Singing of Birds, which the Library of Congress has, it's got a beautifully coloured front page as a dedication to his wife.

How wonderful to be related. I always wonder about the descendants of composers and what they are doing now, does any talent pass down ?
David.

I doubt that I'm actually descended from Addison, as our branch of the Wyman family came South from New England in the early 18th century. I do think that musical ability is (to some degree) hereditary. My father's mother's family (the Wymans) had lots of musical folks (not famous, just musical). My father was musical. I'm quite musical. Do I compose? Only with my hands and my ears. I haven't written anything down since I was a small child. But I can improvise a pretty good piece with the best of them (or at least better than the worst of them).

I actually found a PDF of Silvery Waves. I didn't print it out yet; I just sightread it in my head. The piece is certainly not profound. It is classically pedantic, to be frank. I could play it right now if I wanted to use the paper and toner. But it's still cool that I had a relative who published music during his lifetime.
