I made the mistake of clicking on a YouTube video for Vesuvius by David Lanz, and now I'm in love with it and want to but the score! Here's the original, not solo piano: David Lanz "Vesuvius" Here's a gentlemen who's shared his solo performance of Vesuvius, and very kindly set up the video so that you can see his hands, this gives a much better idea of the challenges of this piece than the original with all the extra instuments. solo piano version of Vesuvius by amatuer pianist So, what do you think the tempo is? Has anyone ever seen the sheet music for this? SheetMusicPlus.com sells in in a collection (the Narada sampler 2, unfortunately, I only have 1) and also in a collection of David Lanz's music. And David Lanz sells it on his website, but he doesn't offer any samples, so I don't know what it looks like. Has anyone ever ordered from David Lanz's website? (I can't imagine there would be any problems, right? I would use a CC, not paypall) Maybe I'll order it, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has the score about how fast they think it is, how hard it is etc.

It will not come as a surprise to anybody who knows of my sheet music addiction to hear that I have this score. I love the piece, too; in fact, I think Lanz's Skyline Firedance album is his best. Here's my thoughts on it: It's hard, but not crazy hard. It's in A-minor, so there's no sharps or flats in the key signature. It's another 9 page epic, though, and 90% of the left hand is nonstop triplets (4 groups of triplets per measure, 4/4 time, but highly patterned). The right hand, thank heavens, is no big deal, mostly quarter and half notes, with a couple of big chords and a few passages of triplets that correspond nicely with the left hand. The tempo is probably the most challenging part of it (for me, at least); the score calls it "brightly" whereas I am tempted to call it "galloping." I don't have the time right now to listen to the piece while studying the sheet music, but I think it is possible that it's slightly simplified, as the right hand looks almost *too* easy to me. The book I have is called "The David Lanz Collection", and it has some other very nice selections in it. I've played "Behind the waterfall/Desert Rain", which is very nice, and "Dream of the Forgotten Child" from it, and (as always) I've intended to learn the Firedance suite at some point in the future. This is sort of O.T., but I'll tell you what my dream David Lanz piece to learn is: his arrangement of "Nights in White Satin." I took a stab at it about a year ago but never could get it to flow, but I keep meaning to dig it out and try it again. Simply lovely.

Monica, I was just going to PM you, but thought I'd do a public post. I knew you wouldn't let us down! When you have a sec, click on that YouTube link of the solo recording, and tell me what you think, or rather, if you think he is playing something like what's on the score, or if he's embellished a lot. I was going to try to contact the guy who posted the video, but that was three years ago. Anyway, I am sure you're busy, so only if you have a minute, I'd be interested to hear what you think.

I saw the book Collection on SheetMusicPlus.com, not very expensive either. So I'm wondering if I should get that or just order the single piece from his website.
Collections is rated at level 7 by SMP, and says it has 4-5 note chords in both hands, so that leads me to guess that, if it is simplified, it's not simplified very much.
So Monica, would you recommend Collections?

I only have a fuzzy sense of the level system, but "7" seems pretty high to me. I'm guessing Vesuvius is the hardest piece in the book, simply because of the blistering tempo. Many of the other pieces are a lot easier; e.g., I played both the Waterfall medley and Forgotten Child years ago, before I bought a Zoom. (Hmmm... I really ought to work them up again and make a recording some day...). So, yeah, I'd recommend it, but you have to realize that asking me whether you should buy a sheet music collection is like asking an alcoholic if he'd like a bottle of Sam Adams. I just listened to Vesuvius on Rhapsody at my office. While I don't have my sheet music in front of me to confirm this, the more I listen to it, the more I think the score is pretty accurate, and it's just the tempo that makes it sound horrifically difficult.

Monica, thanks for the comments. I am one of those score-addicts too, so I think I'll go with the collection rather than the single score. I can justify it by telling myself I'm ordering the book because I have a SMP discount ready to expire! Re the level, that's SheetMusicPlus's system, and as I recall, the number go up pretty high (hmm, I should look again actually), so 7 is like late intermediate or something like. Have you ever looked at their level system? It's pretty detailed, because they explain what their ranking criteria are. I am on my way out now, but I think I'll go and re-read their ranking when I get back, and see what I think of it. Re Vesuvius, the YouTube link that shows the hands confirms your assessment. It's not the music, or the notes themselves, but the tempo that makes it hard. [self-thread-jack] Hey, you should set your Zoom up like that, so we get an overhead shot of your hands! And while you're at it, you can start making tutorials! Cuz I know you have so much free time! :P Speaking of recording, over the holidays I bought some cables and I'm going to try my next recording by hooking the Zoom up to the digital piano through the headphone jack, so I don't record through the air. I hope it produces nice results, cuz those cables aren't cheap! [/self-tread-jack]

[joins in thread-jack] Over in the members' recording forum there's a thread on the Zooms talking about a handy little device you can buy that will allow you to mount any Zoom model on a standard microphone boom/stand: This gadget will make it much easier to get an overhead-looking-down camera angle. It's available at this website and only costs eight bucks. I am definitely going to order one! [/thread-jack]

Ooh! Cool gadget! Thus far, I have either set my zoom somewhere or else used Mr SK's camera tripod. Works fine, but definitely wouldn't enable getting an overhead angle. Wait, I don't have a video zoom... Maybe I could just buy this in preparation!
