I live in Singapore which has a tropical climate and I am currently looking to buy a new upright piano.

My 40 year old PETROF has reached the end of its life span.
It has served me well all these years.

I would appreciate some advice as to which brand of upright piano i should buy. My budget is up to S$8000.00.

Thank you in advance! smile

Hi, I have a few recommendations for you.

1) Try Wilh. Steinberg & Schimmel at Chiu Pianos in Thomson Plaza
2) Sauter
3) Seiler at Cristofori
4) Hailun at Pianomaster
5) Perzina at Sonare Music Square
6) Yamaha
7) Kawai at Robert Pianos
8) Used Yamaha/Kawai at very good quality (IMM warehouse, Piano Galleria)

The first 3 suggestions would cost more than $8000. For that budget, you are looking at some of the following:

Japanese
a. Yamaha/Kawais (U1 is just above $8k, while the K3 is under $8k), or even used ones if you want the bigger ones.

Chinese
b. Perzinas (@Singapore shopping centre), Hailuns (@Geylang East), Kayserbergs (@cristofori), and Wilhelm Tells @ Gramercy

Others (e.g. Korean)
c. W. Knabes, Albert Webers (@ Cristofori - do some bargaining as the starting price when not on sale is higher than $8k), Bohemia (the shorter uprights).

Again, $8000 is a bit of a limbo price - $10k would get you full-sized Bohemias/W Hoffman/Yamaha U1/U3/Kawai K5 - which are very excellent, and even the Hailun Baby grand which is very nice. Finally, for that price range you can possibly get a used Baby Grand (there's what looks like a Yamaha GC1 going for $8000 on ebay), if you have space for it. Note that a grand is not necessarily louder to the neighbours (if you push an upright to the wall it is more likely to be louder to the neighbours), and it does sound better and has a better action.

That to me would be the best deal, even if you did ask specifically for an upright.

Wow...i guess a baby grand would be nice.
Unfortunately, I do not have the space for it in my home.

Do you think, perhaps, I should wait for the shops to have their sales? Then maybe i can get a S$10 000 piano that will be within my budget or just slightly over?

Reductions are very significant at the sale (10-20%).

That being said, I believe Kawai and Yamaha may be having their sales now, and Cristofori has random sales every 2 weeks - so you don't have to wait long.

Hailun and Perzina are at every day low prices, so no point waiting for a sale. Gramercy doesn't cut the price much during sales either.

You may also want to try Emmanuel and Sons for restored older pianos - the main benefit is that you get Mr Kwan as your tech. smile Asia Piano also has a large stock of relatively new Kawais and Yamahas.

Don't just look at the prices, play the pianos, or have someone play them for you so that you get a sound and touch on a piano that you like. Remember a piano is an instrument, not just a piece of furniture. The Perzina pianos have a very nice, full sound, and very responsive touch. The Schimmels are wonderful also but may present a problem for your price point.

i suppose it's worth a shot smile
since I still haven't really narrowed down my list of choices. All I know is, I should avoid pianos that are built in Indonesia.

I am really grateful to everyone who has taken the time to advise me on my purchase.

Singapore is a small place; I do recommend trying all the pianos before deciding. Everybody has a different taste after all. smile
