Hi all,

I'm looking for a short piece that I might have the time to memorize. As an indication of Mozart level, in the distant past I've played the turkish rondo and the 1st movement of the bflat sonata (333).

Last week I tried to work on the f major sonata 1st mov.(533 I think) but realized I'm not going to get through 8 pgs. This is more of a stepping stone and I want to have time to learn other things. My life at the moment won't permit me to learn 8 pages without spending many months.

2-4 pages is more appropriate for me right now. Something I'm looking for is practice with runs, ornaments and arpeggios. The f major seemed to cover this but too long to finish. I'm open to other composers from baroque or classical period that will cover this criteria.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,

t

you could do one of the rondo movements from the sonatas like K.333 that you studied before since there is a lot of repeats.

How about the D minor Fantasie? 4 pages long.

The second movement of the A Major Sonata K. 331 is 2 pages, but it has repeats AND goes back to the first section (it is a minuet and trio) so you can make it longer when you perform.

Along with the suggested Fantasia in D minor, there is a Romance (Andante) in A-flat major, K.Anh. 205, 3 pages, (attributed to Mozart), found in Schirmers: Mozart: Twelve Piano Pieces, Schirmer Vol. 382

This is a weird piece but Mozart wrote a series of variations on, basically, twinkle twinkle little star - though it was called Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman' at the time. Starts with pretty much the familiar theme then gets more interesting. Mostly fairly banal but several of the variations are fun to play. Short and witty. K265 if you're interested.

I picture Mozart writing these while Constanze and the kids had to the park. Alone in his apartment with a precious hour himself he found he couldn't get those infernal children's songs out of his head and so had to purge them by writing some variations. Definately no evidence that this is true.

I like the idea of continuing a sonata I've already begun. The 2nd movement of k331 is a possibility here. But as much as I love the 3rd movement of the k333 it's a ton of notes and I think would be a huge investment of time (not sure if I'm up to it technically either). If I thought my fingers could handle it the 3rd movement of k576 would be awesome to play. Anyone played that?

Turns out I have the music for this piece (Romance). I would like to try it but so far can't find any recordings of it.

Why would not finding a recording of it prevent you from trying it out?

Why, back when I was your age, we had to walk two days through the snow to see a pianist perform this before we could learn it. laugh

I would suggest the Rondo in A minor K. 511. Third movement of K. 576 is tricky but not as difficult as the first movement of the same sonata..

I think the Rondo is sublime and should be in the repertoire of every serious pianist (IMHO), but it might be a little longer than what the OP was looking for.

That is why I suggested the Adagio instead.

LOL I was asking for that. I would probably gain from not hearing it except that I already have a backlog of stuff I'm trying to learn. I generally don't get to practice until the weekend so it's nice to browse with my ear until then.

The a minor Rondo is another piece I haven't heard before so I'll have to check that one out.
