Hi evrbdy! smile

I would really like some examples of great books that are about analysis on bach inventions and fugues and also preludes.
I think that it is hard to search for those things on google so therefore I turn to all you guys here:)
so please help me with some book on bach analysis. The best is when the books treat many of his pieces and not just one or two:)

thanks
keep on rockin' everybody!

Highly regarded: Interpreting Bach at the Keyboard by Badura-Skoda

I just bought "The Art of Fugue" by Joseph Kerman but I haven't read it yet.

There are also the following :

Cecil Gray. The Forty-Eight Preludes and Fugues of J. S. Bach. London, Oxford University Press, 1938 (1967)

Frederick Iliffe. Analysis of Bach's 48 Preludes & Fugues. London, Novello and Company Ltd., (no date)

Many editions of the Preludes and Fugues as well as editions of the Inventions and Sinfonias have good introductory remarks and some analysis. See, particularly, Donald Frances Tovey's editions.

Regards,

Indeed, there are books, but there are also several websites that analyze WTC fugues.

Try this one:

http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~tas3/wtc.html

Move the cursor over the black portrait of JSB, then click on one key for a small window to open to the left. Move the cursor over to the window and click on "Play movie."

Do google search on "Bach fugue analysis" to find more such websites.

Enjoy!

Andras Schiff's lectures on Beethoven's sonatas are quite popular and are well-received for the most part, even if some think he's somewhat pedantic.

I saw a book at school: "Interpreting Mozart : the performance of his piano pieces and other compositions" by Eva & Paul Badura-Skoda. I believe it was quoted in a musicology paper that I read a couple months ago.

I've got Ralph Kirkpatrick's Interpreting Bach's WTC. It has a section on Bach's harmonic language, though the book is geared towards performance and any theory is only towards that end (a good thing IMO!). If performance is your goal, it's a well written book full of useful ideas. More of a guidebook than recipebook - most of it will make sense in the context of performing experience.
