Thanks for your kind words; I spent the last couple of months working really hard on my piece so it's nice to hear that you enjoyed it. I feel like playing it on a keyboard rather than a real piano was almost cheating, since it is so much easier to play softly and vary the dynamics on a DP. When I play on a real piano everything is too loud and uneven. One day I will save up and buy a Steinway.

I'm listening to the recital right now and I'm blown away by how great everybody sounds. Thanks again to everyone for giving me an incentive to work hard and try to perfect my piece. My bass soloing has gotten a lot more melodic (I play jazz upright bass) since I started playing piano, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I started to pay close attention to the nuances of my performance in order to prepare for the recital.

Thanks to HIMS, B52nf7, Jazzwee, cscl, for such kind comments on my Bach piece. smile

Frozenicicles - thanks for the spot-on advice. Any good advice for "recording" nerves? ha

Jotur & Bunneh- thanks for the nicest comments, I really appreciate them!

My thanks to Monica, Mahlzheit and LaValse for their continued hard work and excellence in bringing our recital together. This again is a fantastic variety of pieces with excellent performances.

01. LisztAddict - Nocturne Op 9 No 1

The dynamics and rubato on this Nocturne were flawless to me. Technically just about perfect. A wonderful performance.

02. AnthonyB - Nefeli

This piece seems to be subtly very demanding to keep everything moving along. You had an even tempo and did very well. The theme is very powerful, brought out nicely.

03. Ken. - Minuet fait par Monsieur Bohm

Excellent control and articulation with the left hand on this piece. Very pleasant.

04. z32/Ben - Dream

This is a new one for me. It’s a beautiful theme which really resonated by your performance. Good work.

05. BenPiano - Adagio in B minor KV 540

Very nice interplay between the left and right hands.
Good control over the speedier passages. This stands very well as a separate piece. I thought the finish was excellent.

06. dannylux / Mel - Intermezzo Op.29 No.4

This really is a nice lively piece, exhilarating and played with a real flourish to match. It sounds like you really have to be on your toes for this one. Terrific performance and your P140 sounds excellent.

07. ten left thumbs - Slow Blues in G

Very well done. The trills were great. A nice dialogue between the left and right hands and good work on those slurs as well. Stay with the blues it sounds great.

08. Peyton - Thoughts of Anne

That was a very powerful composition. It has a real driving forward quality to it. I especially liked your use of the lower registers of the keyboard. Very creative.

10. joangolfing - Prelude No. 4 in F Major

Beautiful touch on the keyboard here. Some unusual chord changes which gave a richness to the piece.

54. MaryBee - Sonata Facile in C, K.545, Mvt.1
I have heard this piece many times but didn’t know what it was/is. Doesn’t sound facile to me – well played!

55. epf - Swipsey
This is quite different from the other pieces on your YouTube site. I really like this a lot. It has a bouncy, carefree feel that is very easy to listen to.

56. grotrianer - Ständchen
You have captured the melancholy mood of this piece very well. The tone of your piano suits this perfectly.

57. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Lute Prelude in c minor (BWV 999)
Cleanly and precisely played. Well done!

58. TTigg / Steve C - Life & Death
You have my vote for Most Artsy Video. I’ve never seen this program but the music is quite haunting and nicely performed.

59. Bunneh - Valse a minor, op. posth.
This is played with confidence and skill. This is an excellent submission much less for someone only playing 18 months. Bravo!

61. Mar_red - Kasztany (Chestnuts) & Suicide Is Painless (Medley)
Your submission is one of my favorites in this recital – the turnaround is very cool and works well. This is the first time I’ve heard Suicide is Painless played at such a suicidal tempo – I like it.

62. Yamaha G3 & P-80 Mike White - E lucevan le stelle
We had the Untouchables on the TV yesterday and this piece was played when Al Capone was at the opera after ordering a hit on Sean Connerly. Your rendition is very good.

64. BB Player - Comptine d'autre ete
I have never heard this piece before and enjoyed it very much. I’m glad you decided to participate in the recital.

Here's the next batch:
33. Ode2Joy1 - Chopin Mazurka in D Major, Op. 33 No.2
There’s nothing wrong with playing a tad slower as long as it’s musical. I think you did it quite well – it didn’t sound too ponderous. Good luck at your teacher’s recital!

34. b528nf7 (Bill) - Someone To Watch Over Me
Very nice! I should learn how to sing and play one of these days – I can’t seem to be able to read music and the words at the same time. Do you have one or the other memorized?

35. PaulMac - Minuet in G
This is very nice! I’ve always loved this Minuet. Your playing is very clear and rhythmically accurate. Don’t be afraid to add in even more dynamics.

36. mahlzeit - Recital 17
I really liked this composition. It’s excellent for being at the last minute.

37. Alleykatt - Cathy - Theme & Variations From The Moldau
I remember learning about Smetana in music history. You did a lovely job with this.

38. Norah - Le Onde
An upcoming performance is always great motivation to get things polished. I’d love to see a video too since you have the Q3. wink The left hand is a bit heavy at times – try to keep it really light and flowing.

39. Mark... - Prelude in A Major Op. 28, No. 7
This is a lovely little Prelude. Congrats on your first Chopin! Try to keep it more legato and flowing. I always imagine people in ballgowns dancing to this.

40. Eighty8 - In My Life
Good job! I really enjoyed this. Interesting information on the tape speed doubling.

41. DragonPianoPlayer - Chopin Prelude No 6
That sounds like a yummy dinner you had. This is very nice – I like the tempo you chose. Your touch is a bit heavy and harsh at times. Work on eliminating excess tension and it’ll sound even better. thumb

42. eggsdeee - Alt Wien (Old Vienna)
That’s a lovely and graceful piece. I love how well you brought out the melody and how you played with the tempo just a bit. It could use more dynamics, but sometimes recordings aren’t very good at showing what dynamics you were using.

43. Coldsalmon - Preludes Op.28 No. 15 in D-flat Major, Raindrop
Lovely performance! This is one of my favourite Chopin Preludes. Work on getting your turns really smooth – some of them caused a little glitch in the flow.

44. bluekeys - I Will
I think I’ve heard this somewhere – maybe on TV? Congrats on persevering to get a good recording. Try alternating 3,4, and 5 for the top note of the sixths – it should improve your accuracy so that you don’t have to move your hand as much.

45. Quagles - Dear You
This piece is really lovely and lyrical. You did a great job.

46. pianahman (Richard Griffin) - Arabesque
Great performance! I think you contrasted the sections really well. Are you submitting it for the Schumann e-cital in June?

47. Inlanding/Glen - Prelude in C Major BWV 846
I really like the dynamics that you’ve added. So many people like to play Bach at a bland mf. I would prefer the phrases shaped a little more.

48. Musictuary - Sonatina in C Major - Op. 55 No. 1
I like your crisp articulation. Your scale passages are generally pretty even as well, except for a few glitches. You also keep a nice and steady tempo. My major suggestion is to allow tiny spaces for the music to breathe. I get the feeling of a long run on sentence at times – take a tiny bit more time at transitions.

49. Tenolios - Vesper from Casino Royale
This is really great for 6 months of self-taught piano. Bravo!

50. Euan Morrison - Opening (from Glassworks)
Good work on this. I’ve never heard this piece before – it’s a bit too repetitive for my taste but you did it well.

51. IPIBAHN Sandy - Consolation Op. 19 No. 4
This is really nice so far. You’ve brought out a lot of nuances and you shape your phrases really well. Good luck on getting it up to speed. thumb

52. Monica K. - Berlin Song
First of all, I love the camera angle on your Q3. I’m still experimenting with mine, and none of my videos come out as nice looking as yours. I think your chords could be voiced a little more by quieting the middle voices. The pedaling was a bit muddy at times – maybe you were lifting it up and down too quickly to get the sound cleared. Watch that your sound doesn’t become too harsh at times. Overall, lovely and controlled playing.

53. jotur - Bethena
I’m usually not a fan of ragtime, but I really enjoy listening to this one. Thanks for the great performance.

54. MaryBee - Sonata Facile in C, K.545, Mvt.1
I’m a big Mozart fan too. His music sounds simple but it’s actually quite difficult to perform well. I recommend doing lots of slow and careful practice. You can’t afford to get sloppy with Mozart because it becomes immediately apparent. You’ve done a great job so far and I can tell lots of practicing has gone into it. thumb

#1. LA- Perfect! What else to say?
#2. AnthonyB- What a beautiful piece. And you played it wonderfully.
#3. Ken. Nice playing Ken. I could really hear all of the voices. Well done.
#4. Ben. Very dreamy piece. You put some very nice feeling into it.
#5. benpiano- Great work. I love your interpretation. It's fun to read your "story".
#6. Mel. That was a lot of fun to listen to.

Peyton - Thoughts of Anne

Anne must have made quite an impression on you! smile I dread to think how complicated the complicated version was, but I very much enjoyed this one. Thankyou.

You're welcome! I always like to give (and receive) constructive comments when I can. As for recording - the best ones I've done have been when I've practiced the piece a lot, as much as I would for a live performance. Then I give myself one shot to record it. The music loses vitality and acquires tension from being performed too many times in one sitting.

Some other people asked as well... Anne was the first girl to totally break my heart. There were lyrics, pretty sappy ones I'm sure, now long gone.

The "complicated" version had some difficult Schubert like triplets that went all up and down the keyboard. I sure as heck couldn't play them.... smile

Good advice, Frozenicicles. I do keep recording over & over. Guess I'll plan a little further ahead next time, and do as some others have, and try just one recording a day.

Or you could leave the recorder on and relax, play something for fun and concentrate on your playing, after a few minutes you won't be as bothered by the fact you are recording and then you can give your desired piece a try. Afterwards just cut the part before the piece you initially wanted to record.

Peyton - Thoughts of Anne

This was excellent!

31. CMohr - Gavotte I & Gavotte II ou la Musette from English Suite #3 in Gminor

CMohr, very much impressed with this up tempo piece. It certainly sounds like a challenge and I think you did very well with it. The recording sounded good as well, I likey the Mikey. smile

32. NancyM333 - Revolutionary Etude (Opus 10, No. 12)
Cudos for tackling this Etude. It is an accomplishment to just get the notes in hand and I think you have made good progress with it.

33. Ode2Joy1 - Chopin Mazurka in D Major, Op. 33 No.2

Very nicely done. As good as this is- you should do well in your recital. thumb

34. b528nf7 (Bill) - Someone To Watch Over Me
Bill, loved the intro. This is an absolute favorite of mine and even though I can't sing, I have been known to garble warble this one. Your voice is perfect for this song, thanks so much for the pleasure of listening to a very nice performance!

35. PaulMac - Minuet in G

Very well done for your time on the bench. A couple of very sight tempo issues, but a few more practice sessions will take care of that. Musically very good!

36. mahlzeit - Recital 17
Nice! I particularly like the soft left hand in the beginning.

37. Alleykatt - Cathy - Theme & Variations From The Moldau
Very nice playing. I enjoyed this piece very much! A unique tone to your piano... I like it.

38. Norah - Le Onde
Nicely done, good phrasing- a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for the submittal!

39. Mark... - Prelude in A Major Op. 28, No. 7

I am finding Chopin to be an endless source of treasures. Good job with this Prelude... keep it up!

40. Eighty8 - In My Life

Thanks for the info on this song, very interesting. It is a fabulous song selection. I enjoyed listening to you play.

41. DragonPianoPlayer - Chopin Prelude No 6
DPP it is enjoyable to hear you work through the Preludes. This is good one, if not a bit more difficult to play, good job!

Them as break your heart, break your fingers too.

Jazzwee - Stella. I also thought this was wonderful, jazzwee The improvisation is crystal clear, and if there were changes in tempo, then they came across quite naturally. But you are right - it is time you went pro and got yourself a percussionist. wink

Picking a few more or less at random to comment on:

05. BenPiano - Adagio in B minor KV 540
Ben, that is a real accomplishment! You are quite skilled at cross hand playing, tricky fingering, dynamics. Well done.

07. ten left thumbs - Slow Blues in G
TLT, what a great, relaxed, bluesey feeling! Keeping your left hand stride steady like that is really hard. Good solo work! Well done.

09. Manndrew - Danny Boy
Oh boy, that was sublime! Beautiful harmonizations, with no grunting or groaning or other guttural noises or gnashing of teeth!!! Jarrett should just send you out to play his transcriptions! Great job, Andy.

22. Jazzwee - Stella by Starlight
Jazzwee - quite excellent! I really liked the solo, and the classy ending. This is such a great song, with a variety of neat changes, and you are quite adept at taking advantage of them. Outstanding!

24. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - When I Fall In Love
Great job, Dennis. I like this much better than the standard oom-pah arrangement that shows up in books of standards. There is a climax in there that I thought you played superbly! Well done.

32. NancyM333 - Revolutionary Etude (Opus 10, No. 12)
Nancy, that was outstanding! I really loved it. I used to play a very simplified version of it on a Hammond organ. My pounding (on those great chords) is probably what broke the organ! I guess I played with passion, but no skill; you've got both! I listened to it a couple of times. Great job.

34. b528nf7 (Bill) - Someone To Watch Over Me
Bill, another great performance. Last year, I was called on, out of the blue, to accompany my niece singing this song. Wish I could have played in your style! Well done.

37. Alleykatt - Cathy - Theme & Variations From The Moldau
Cathy, I liked that as much as the full symphonic version played live! I suppose it was all in my head, but I really did get the feeling of being in the presence of an awesome river. Great job, nice dynamics!

43. Coldsalmon - Preludes Op.28 No. 15 in D-flat Major, Raindrop
Coldsalmon, that was beautiful. You really play with great skill and feeling. Absolutely awesome!

47. Inlanding/Glen - Prelude in C Major BWV 846
Glen, that was wonderful, just wonderful. What a beautiful piece of music, played so well. I loved it!

53. jotur - Bethena
Cathy, that was terrific! I don't know if I've heard this before, but I really liked it. You played with a perfect, light touch and good rhythym. Tricky left hand stuff in there too - which you played beautifully. Well done.

66. Augustina - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
One of my all-time favorite pieces of music. Well done. The way you handled the ending was perfect!

69. wj3 - Irish Medley, Wild Irish Rose, When Irish Eyes are Smiling and Londonderry Air
Add "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen", and you'll have the songs I heard as kid - so very long ago - sung by my (slightly inebriated) uncle in a beautiful tenor voice, accompanied by my aunt on a slightly out of tune piano. Thanks for picking these great old songs. Well done!

First few...

01. LisztAddict - Nocturne Op 9 No 1 Amazing!! Very professional. If I ever get to doing a Chopin Nocturne - this is the one. It's my favourite! Great start to the recital.

02. AnthonyB - Nefeli 2 Years...don't believe you.Wonderful piece and played like someone with much more than 2 years under his belt...er...fingers!.

03. Ken. - Minuet fait par Monsieur Bohm Not familiar with this piece - really enjoyed it. You kept the left hand very steady

04. z32/Ben - Dream Wonderful. One to keep on my iPod. Thank you.

05. BenPiano - Adagio in B minor KV 540 I can see why this piece attracted you. The variety is interesting - even moreso having read your interpretation. Very nice.

06. dannylux / Mel - Intermezzo Op.29 No.4 What a great job on a complicated piece. Well played!

07. ten left thumbs - Slow Blues in G Loved the bluesyness (that a word?) of this piece. Very catchy - improvised right? Really good.

08. Peyton - Thoughts of Anne This is a wonderful piece. I enjoy all your recordings but I think this is my favourite! Simple melody but great harmonies and full of emotion. I loved it!

09. Manndrew - Danny Boy Thank you for submitting this piece. I keep looking for "that' piece to learn for family and friends - this could be it! Beautiful job.

10. joangolfing - Prelude No. 4 in F Major This is a composer I'm not familiar with. Very enjoyable. You have great control and I thought the dynamics were perfect.

11. John Frank - Ashokan Farewell What a nice introduction. This piece gave me goosebumps. Thank you for sharing.

12. TrueBeginner - Until Dawn I really enjoyed this piece and still listen in amazement when someone improvises... Nice!

13. Riddler (Ed) - On Green Dolphin Street Neat! I have background music to some of my pieces but never seem to be able to play along. Must be fun! Great job!

14. Strings & Wood/CarlMc - Prelude in E minor OP. 28 No. 4 I love this piece. I did it last summer. My regular teacher and my summer camp teacher had different ideas of how it should be played and I struggled between rubato and steadyness... the piece is so much more difficult to play correctly than one first thinks. You did a nice job and I liked the speed although I ended up with more evenness because of my teacher, I always felt mine was a little too slow... very nice.

cebukid - thanks for the comments - I'm glad the tempo seemed ok.

Bill - LOL. Did you, then, waltz with your wife of 38 years, or Abby with the long ears? smile Thanks for the "sophisticated" - I appreciated that comment.

CMohr, jazzwee, frozenicicles - thanks for the comments. I suspect, jazzwee, that being a dancer has a lot to do with my rhythm.

Riddler - your comments always mean a lot to me. Hm. Good rhythm except for that - what, 2 sec? - gap when I thought maybe the recording had stopped laugh But someday I'm going to play more stuff like you play -

I'll listen some more close to the end of the week. I'm really enjoying the commentary.

Cathy

Last batch:
55. epf - Swipsey
Another ragtime piece. This one is really catchy and I don’t remember hearing it before. Thanks for the great performance.

56. grotrianer - Ständchen
It might help you to tone down the heavy texture to focus on one left hand voice you want to bring out over the other. Overall, a lovely and sensitive performance. The melody came through really well.

57. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Lute Prelude in c minor (BWV 999)
Bach does demand a high level of perfection, which is why it’s so good for our technique. I think that the piece could use more dynamics. You’ve done a good job in getting those notes under your fingers. The ending is very nice.

58. TTigg / Steve C - Life & Death
Very nice. I don’t watch Lost so I don’t really know what’s going on, but I liked the video splicing that you did.

59. Bunneh - Valse a minor, op. posth.
Excellent for only 18 months! Hmm…critical feedback. I get the sense that you’re thinking there’s three beats in the bar, but Waltzes should have more bar rhythm. Try to minimize beats 2 and 3, especially in the left hand. It could also use a tiny bit more rubato, but that’s a personal preference.

60. Always Wanted to Play Piano - Sonatina Op.36 No.1 in C major - Movements 2 and 3
Very nice! You have some trouble keeping the hands together in the 3rd movement, so be careful with that. Slow and careful practice is the way to go.

61. Mar_red - Kasztany (Chestnuts) & Suicide Is Painless (Medley)
I like the way you’ve combined the two melodies. You should use this talent to do some gigging.

62. Yamaha G3 & P-80 Mike White - E lucevan le stelle
This is awesome for sight reading. Some of the chords are a little heavy and harsh. Keep on working at it! Maybe post a polished version at the next recital?

63. ShiroKuro - Summer
Thanks for sharing.

64. BB Player - Comptine d'autre ete
Great playing of this popular piece. Hopefully you’ll inspire more people to tackle it for future recitals so that Yann Tiersen won’t complain again. wink

65. Copper - When I Fall in Love
Lovely playing. This is another tune I’ve never heard before. I like the strings near the end.

66. Augustina - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
Congrats on your first recital! Great playing, but I’d prefer it on piano. wink Also, from what I can see of your video, you seem to be holding your wrists a little too low.

67. EJR (Elwyn) - Solfeggietto
I love Solfeggietto. You’re doing a great job on this so far. Make sure to keep those runs steady, though. There are sections where your hands seem to be coming apart a bit. Also, some parts are a bit rushed. Great job so far! I really enjoyed listening.

68. Sam Smith - Bach Invention #1
Great performance! Personally, I think it would sound better with the eighth notes detached – it sounds a bit “mushy” right now. It could also use more variation in dynamics. I thought that you brought out the theme really well each time, but for some reason I found that your right hand was more prominent than the left. Remember that this is contrapuntal music and not melody and harmony. Your notes were really clear and your tempo was consistent.

69. wj3 - Irish Medley, Wild Irish Rose, When Irish Eyes are Smiling and Londonderry Air
Great idea to do an Irish medley. I don’t know if it’s my computer, your recording device or the piano, but I’m getting a lot of distortion when I listen to it.

21 mcasl - Erster Verlust, Schumann
Nice job on this little piece. I enjoyed listening. Very impressive after only 15 months.

22 Jazzwee - Stella By Starlight, Victor Young
This is a really nice jazz improv. I enjoyed your version of this classic. Great job, as usual.

23 LaValse - Etude Op. 2, Scriabin
This is a very emotional piece, and your interpretation fits it perfectly. Another fabulous performance!

24 Some goofball from Texas - When I Fall in Love, Edward Heyman & Victor Young
Good song selection for this time of year. That's a lot of rubato there, son. Maybe a tad overpedaled in places, too. Otherwise not too bad.

25 ddh - Daniel - La fuente y la campana (The Fountain and the Bell), Federico Mompou
Daniel, this is an interesting piece. It starts out quite pretty and finishes that way. I must confess that I do not like the atonal section in the middle, though. I guess that is the fountain part. I find atonal pieces difficult both to listen to and to play. My loss, I suppose. Your playing fits the piece nicely. Great job.

26 Serge88 -What A Wonderful World, Bob Thiele and George David Weiss
Another of my favorite songs. Serge, you did a great job on this. I like what you've done with it. Wonderful job!

27 Another Schmoe - Eyes On Me, Nobuo Uematsu
A beautiful emotive interpretation of the piece. Tremendous!

28 Teodor Tenchev - The Little Shepherd's Song, Alexander Raichev
Teodor, I am not familiar with this piece, but it is quite lovely. If you truly have been playing for only 3 months, this is nothing short of amazing. Any errors were well covered indeed and not noticed at all. Beautiful job!

29 HomeInMyShoes (Aaron) - op. 15, nos. 1, 4 & 8, Schumann
A wonderful job, Aaron. You definitely have these three mastered.

30 Monster M&H - Les - Misty, Erroll Garner
Les, I always love your submissions. This one is no exception. A beautiful and interesting rendition of Misty that is just delightful. Your new rebuild sounds great, too.

That's all for now . . .

Sorry, I'm not very good at thinking up original comments for each performance for individual feedback, I'd mostly just be saying "Very nice, I really enjoyed it!" on them all, so to save all the repeating let me just say it to everyone at once...

Great job everyone! thumb

I haven't listened to them all yet, but I have listened to quite a few and they were all fantastic. Another wonderful recital. A big thank you and congratulations to all participants. smile

Nice job. Those are pretty nice trills. Very enjoyable performance.

32 Nancy M333 - Revolutionary Etude, Chopin
Nancy, I'm impressed with your effort. i would not dream of attempting this difficult piece. The fact that you are willing to do so coupled with the fact that your attempt is mostly successful speaks well of your abilities. An enjoyable listen.

A splendid performance. There's nothing else to add. Bravo!

13. Riddler (Ed) - On Green Dolphin Street

Excellent interpretation Ed - heard this song many times over the years and always liked it - have a great vocal version by Tony Bennett - professional stuff!

14. Strings & Wood/CarlMc - Prelude in E minor OP. 28 No. 4

Nicely played Carl - like this minor key stuff.

20. mattodono - Musette in D Major BWV Anh. 126

Well done thumb

22. Jazzwee - Stella by Starlight

Nice improv jazzwee - but, I think a clearer, more recognizable statement of this great old tune's melody line at the beginning also (in addition to the one at the end) before the improv begins would have improved this considerably.
