Mr Hollands Opus is a great film. I watched it again recently and never fail to be moved by the scene where he sings with sign language a version of Beautiful Boy to his deaf son. He's excellent in American Graffiti too. I've heard Shine is a must for piano lovers but I've yet to get hold of a copy. Amadeus got me hooked on Mozart. I since discovered there are some unproven statements though. Theres no evidence to suggest Mozart and Salieri didn't have a good relationship or that Salieri conspired his downfall. I love the fact he had a crude sense of humour and some of his notes and manuscripts have toilet-humour markings. Its something we have in common! An incredible performance by F. Murray Abraham and deserved Oscar winner. I think Tom Hulce deserved one as well. My Saturday night viewing sorted out. There it is!

The Pianist is the first one that comes to mind. Really good film. Some more films I can think of that feature classical music: The Beat that my Heart Skipped Three Colours Blue The Page Turner (I would assume...not seen it yet) and..Cello ( if you like your slightly surreal, psychological Korean horror films, which I do!). Oh yes and Humoresque. I'm sure I'll think of some more later...

"The Competition" (1980), starring Richard Dreyfuss and Amy Irving. If I rememeber correctly, Dreyfuss' character performs Beethoven's 5th piano concerto, and Irving's character performs Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto. Of course, only fragments are heard in the movie.

In adition to the above memtioned favorites (Mr. Holland's Opus, Amadeus, Shine, Phantom of the Opera and The Pianist) please allow me to add my personal favorite, "Glenn Gould, The Alchemist" Mr. Gould was not only a genius of many talents, but the most fantistic keyboard artist I've ever had the honor of hearing. I've learned a great deal about how to play baroque music from watching this amazing DVD of Mr. Gould!

YES, Lolium!!!! The legend of 1900 is AWESOME.
I've been trying to drill those Jelly Roll Morton pieces into my brain and hands for two years now.
I get chills thinking about that scene and the lighting of the cigarette from the strings.

Hands and feet down The Pianist. It is probably the absolute most accurate story besides the book of the true story. Unscarred by modernistic taste to alter the story. The book follows the movie nearly exact. I have never seen a movie that was told so well to the book. Schindler's list is the ONLY other movie, besides The Pianist that I find so realistic to the Holocaust. --- The Soloist is a great movie. Some pretty good music, and a very inspiring story. August Rush is a great one too. Inspiring, but fictional!
