The other night I called my wife by the piano's name.
The piano's name is Stacey. The wife's is not. It was a bad scene.

You stop calling your instrument "my piano" and start referring to it by its special pet name. Fred, of course, that's how I call him. Fred who? Mine is Dolly - after Dolly Dimples the circus fat lady as she's short and wide and was born in 1937 -Dolly's era "Admiral Halsey" is stationed in my living room.

You watch a movie/play a game and all you can think about is whether you can get the sheet music for that one song on the soundtrack.

You might be addicted to piano if...
You collect way more sheet music than can be learned in two life times. That's me. I yanked all 2500 pieces from Piano Street's web site. The annual subscription was just so low ($30) that I could not resist. Your spouse says, ”Honey, I really need to talk to you” and your response is, “I’m almost done with this song.” That's **almost** me. Usually, my reply is ... "" ... until I'm finished with the song. You spend more time on Piano World Forum during work hours than you do working. I think that's what I'm doing right now!

You might be addicted to piano if...
when your wife tells you she will leave home if you buy another piano you think: "gosh, I'm really going to miss her"

haha, i just thought of a good one that i think about
.....when you hesitate to carry anything heavy that may potentially harm your hand. (I had this happen to me once when I was on some date, the girl ended up complaining to my friend how ungentlemanly I was hahhaahhaha)

.....when you hesitate to carry anything heavy that may potentially harm your hand. I don't know if it's addiction or just self (hand) preservation, but I've become a lot more conscious of doing silly things with my hands than I used to be. (and they seem weaker) For example, like carrying a case of beer (cans) with a single finger or without the handle but using using an "ocatave" like grip on the box. My hands immediately scream "NO!". Pretty soon I might have to resort to asking my wife to open jars for me.

You might be addicted to piano if... You can't decide what's worse: reading the Piano World Forums at the expense of practicing or practicing at the expense of reading the Piano World Forums. ...any time you see a piano anywhere, you feel an uncontrollable urge to sit down and play something on it. After all, every piano is different and you have to try them all! That reminds me of this old Russian saying: You can't drink all vodka in the world and you can't do (you know what) to all women in the world... But you should try to!

I had a feeling I was developing an addiction. Now I'm sure. .....and loving it. .... how about you know you are addicted when you dream about being in a hotel and strolling up to the grand and flawlessly playing....... your beginner pieces lol! I think I'm in excellent company!

That reminds me of this old Russian saying: You can't drink all vodka in the world and you can't f**k all women in the world... But you should try to! I'm not exactly sure how this is in any way equivalent at all to being addicted to playing the piano... And repeating it here would tend to make one think that the post was made by one of those old drunken, mind-numbed Russians. Perhaps instead of a verbatim quote (with a couple of cheesey asterisks) you might have chosen to substitute the phrase "can't make love to..." just for the sake of good taste (and being a little more discretely subtle), and the fact that this is a Forum where "family values" are allegedly the ruling credo. End of unsolicited, but good (and badly needed) advice. JF

I'm not exactly sure how this is in any way equivalent at all to being addicted to playing the piano... I'm absolutely sure that it is not equivalent. I wrote in the context of another poster's text: and you have to try them all! and that was just my association, not comparison. this is a Forum where "family values" are allegedly the ruling credo. May I point out that the title of this forum contains the "Adult" attribute (and I'm not at this moment frivolously referring to the second, euphemistic meaning of that word). I sincerely apologize you, John Frank, and everybody else who might be offended by my post.

You might be addicted to piano if... ...when you’re pulling groceries home in a little backpack with wheels, you notice the regular rhythm of the wheels clicking over the tile floor at the mall & try to figure out the time signature ...

like someone scolding a drunk the morning after a night of excessive comsumption, your girlfriend says "do you have any idea how many hours you spent practicing the piano yesterday...? Ha ha! My husband reproached me this morning: "You were up really late last night playing the piano." But I was only playing 'til 1:00 in the morning! the piano is the only piece of furniture you have ever cleaned or dusted yep, that's me!

....addicted to piano if...
1. Your practice log audit software tells you that:
Start date: 19/03/2009 End date: 11/03/2010 Time(mins): 14745 Time(hrs): 246 Days in period: 358 Days of Practice: 200 Avg pract time: 74 Avg daily time: 41
2. You've formally asked your IM&T department to change the "tune" on the bar-code readers attached to PCs to something else other than Paul McCartneys 'live and let die'. Your co-workers have also asked you to not whistle the rest of the tune ofter the bar code reader plays the first few notes every time you boot the PC.
3. You've spotted that the main riff in Jimi Hendrix's machine Gun is very, very similar to Rachmaninoffs Prelude in C# minor.
4. You've noticed that Pedestrian crossings are never a whole octave
5. You've bought closed back headphones for the digital piano, and can get through life by nodding your head when someone speaks to you and looking vaguely interested then muttering "Uh huh", or "Yes of course".
6. The others in the house complain that the noise from the piano (just the clatter of the keys) is too loud (and remember your wearing headphones)
7. You go to work very early to get home to practice when no one else is in the house.
8. You take long lunches to go home and practice (and no one else is there).
9. You scratch built a Leslie speaker to play the Piano part from Pink Floyd's "Echoes"
10. You've told your wife that the cost of the Garden Office/Studio she wants is £45,000 (because that includes the cost of a Grand Piano) ;-)
11. Something sexy must have three wooden legs
12. The only health issues that worry you are carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, rotator cuff syndrome and focal dystonia.
13. Your car has balding tyres, the silencer blowing, various warning lights (dead headlight bulb), head gasket may be gone... but you only book it in to be sorted when the CD player starts playing up.
14. You've figured out that you can copy pianists (given the right camera angle) from youtube by downloading the video, converting the format, loading it into Movie maker (which seems to break it up into sections and phrases automatically), save them as individual video files (one per phrase) which you watch in continuous cycle mode in media player on slow speed...
15.... All the above but "its still just a hobby"...
