Fascinating article on Slate about what ...o listening to.

It compares different passages of music played on different instruments and includes sound samples.

I especially love the discussion about the lack of diversity in sounds these days as far as piano goes. So many points the writer wrote ring true to me.

The best part? I didn't know I live only a bit over an hour away from a piano museum!!!!!!!! YOOHOO!!!! thumb

Lily,

For sure there is in these days a lack of tonal diversity in the performance piano landscape.

This issue, because of the dominance of Steinwnay on the concert scene, was brought up a couple of times here.

Some concert pianists are also aware of this, reference as one example is Andras Schiff (scroll down to what he says about the subject on one of Bösendorfer's pages):

Schiff on tonal diversity

Also members here are sometimes concerned about this; see this recent thread:

A Modern Forte Piano

At the same time we could perhaps also do with a few more 'period pianists', i.e. those investing more in the interpretation of the music of a certain period.

The article starts with a comparison of the Moonlight Sonata (first movement), with on the period instrument following Beethoven's recommendation of keeping the sustain pedal down throughout. This can also be done as witnesses again Andras Schiff:

Andras Schiff on 'Moonlight'

Thank you for sharing this most interesting article.
