Someone who lives not far from me is selling a Kawai baby grand. They managed to find the serial number buried somewhere, and looking it up on the Kawai site it appears to be of 1963 vintage. The piano is black, and appears to be in good condition and hasn't been played much in the last 15 years. It has a few sticking keys at the top, but otherwise good. The tone is extremely bright, which I presume is at least in part due to the hammers having been packed down over the years. This tone would not be terribly appealing to classically trained musicians, but I'm a jazz-rock banger, and I liked the tone. (guitar player, not much of a pianist). I did not look at the soundboard carefully, but it appeared to be OK.
The inside is stamped
Kawai pianos
exhibition awards
Manufactured by
Kawai Musical inst mfg co ltd
Mamamatsu Japan
There is a medallion that says:
kawasakkiseisakusho
KK
Tradmark
registered
Hamamatsu Japan
They are asking $3000, could possibly offer less.
Does anyone have any idea of the value or quality of this piano or any information? I have a friend who is a tuner/technician that I could probably have look at it.
Thanks!

Hi Geoff, welcome to the forum!

It's always a good idea to have a technician look over a piano before you purchase. The voicing may be able to be brought down a bit if you want to, or it may be time for some work to be done. Ask the owner what the maintenance record has been, if they know.

Best of luck to you, happy hunting!

The necessary repairs may be cheap, but don't make that assumption. A good tech will be your best friend in this purchase.

Do understand that you are creeping on 50 years, so some of the major components (pinblock, hammers, strings) may be holding on but really due for replacement.
