Can anyone recommend a textbook that teaches composition in the style of the 18th and 19th century ("common practice")? The only one I'm familiar with that comes close is Piston's Harmony, which has a companion workbook with exercises that include some composition assignments. I'm wondering if there other good ones that might focus more specifically on teaching composition? I've done plenty of 4-part writing and counterpoint exercises, but need guidance learning to compose. Many thanks.

Hi Jerry, I have looked around too for composition books and based on reviews have just bought two: they are
1 "Musical Composition" Reginald Smith Brindle; Paperback; $25.34
2 "Composing Music: A New Approach" William Russo; Plastic Comb; $22.68

Hi again, I just got my two books. The Brindle book is alot more on theory while the Russo book us a workbook with a lot of useful exercises. Seems like the combination of the two books work well together.
