Hello.
I was wondering if there are music peaces that you could play for 10-15 minutes. For background music. I'm not a real pro, I think I'm slightly better then a beginner. I play peaces as Pa Noyee - Yann Tiersen. Baba Yetu - Christopher Tin. Gladiator themes and stuf like that. I play just for fun. And I can read notes. I never had lessons but 19 years ago when I was 11 I had organ lessons for about 6 months. So that is where I got my note reading skills got from. But I want to learn something that I can play nonstop.
It should be relaxing. And I don't mind if it would be a challange.

I'm realy sorry for my bad English but I try my best.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Krukje,

what about Metamorphosis by Philip Glass? Especially No.1 is not that difficult. And if you want, you can repeat it again and again grin

Regards
Benny

Chopin might be a good challenge, and definitely relaxing - try the 2nd Nocturne, and perhaps waltz in Db...

Saties Gnossiennes are not that long, but very relaxing, and they are all buillt around repetitive themes that makes it real easy to 'loop' them into a more or less endless piece of music. Nr1 1-4 (Gnossienne) are not very difficult, but still a nice challenge for a relative beginner.

The other thing I would guess would suit you is just learning about (inverted) chords and chord progressions. With just a little bit of experience you can relatively easily play around forever creating your own 'background music'. But I do not know if that is what you have in mind.

Have fun! (and just curious...why do you want an 'endless' piece of music?)

Thank you very much for the fast replies.

The music pieces you gave me sounded prety easy. I think i can do that.
But does someone also know a piece that is not so heavy? Relaxing, but sounding a little happy or neutral?
I think Chopin with the waltz in still too dificult for me. Its realy fast, going up and down in an (for me) extreme fast pase. But it might be easier then it sounds, i dont know yet.

IngridT, the reason i want an endless piece of music is that, when i play i.e. Yann Tiersen - Comptine d'un autre ete l'apres midi its over after 2-3 minutes, while id like to play for another 10, i realy love to get into the music and stay as long in this 'flow'. So for the piece i mentioned above, i play the verse 1 and 2 in a loop, until i got enough of it. which can take a long time. smile But if i play a prety short music piece for about 15 minutes it gets a little, booring, i dont know if that is the right word, but i want something else.

So i started to learn the Pachelbels Canon, but the George Winston version, but it will take me some time before i can play that piece. So id like to play some more in the mean time.

Ok, I get it! (and in fact I recognize the feeling you are after.)

Gnossiennes 5 & 6 are slightly less melancholic, in fact nr 6 sounds very modern. The reason I mentioned Satie is because you mentioned Yann Tiersen. I love both composers, so that's why I thought Satie would be interesting for you.

Don't underestimate this music by the way. it sounds slow & easy, but to play it well demands quite some effort. (and 5 & 6 are really not that easy if you want a challenge)

But if you want real cheerfull/upbeat stuff..A lot of blues/boogie music is built up in a very organized way and is easy to play on continuously. Whether it's relaxing for you is another question of course..

Ingrid (I just noticed your username. I guess you are dutch as well!?)

I don't know if this is helpful, but I play video game music when I'm in the mood for that sort of playing. There are lots of upbeat pieces, and they tend to loop around so that you can just keep playing it for as long as you want to.

The Gnossiennes i think are just a little too melancholic for me. I have actualy never played blues/booguie before, that might be very interseting, ill have a look around for a nice piece of music.

I think i will take your tip about the inverted chords and chord progressions. I dont know what it means but I will look it up. If i can play just what comes up to mean that would be great, i always thought that that would be for realy advanced players.

Pete:
I can play the Song, Baba Yetu from Civilisatin IV, i dont play the game, but i like the music, other than that i dont realy know any game music appart from Mario.

PS: Im an Dutch indeed.

Krukje....

look for 'popmuziek, zo doe je dat' by Bernie Vayne (Bernard v Veen, but he had an artist-name)

Excellent (dutch) books. I worked with them. If you have a bit of piano background it should be fairly easy for you to grasp the idea. My 12 yr old has learned the approach as well (after reading 2 staffs with notes for about 3 yrs) and does a wonderful job of what we call 'relaxing gepingel' (apart from playing stuff from score of course, he still does that as well)

There's 3 books. Thin, and not very expensive. But start with book 1. You'll have finished it in no time, but you need to understand the basics first.

Ingrid

edited to add: the title says pop music, but the approach basically teaches you to work with chords & improvise. Either from a lead sheet (just a melody line, often used with playing pop songs), by ear (a melody you know, no score at all)or by pure improvising (something you make up yourself)...that's up to you.
