For exmaple the E, it sounds like E it's a full sound, rich and bright, it's ok, but it is with combination of some irritating sound like a sound of a music triangle (high frequency sound). Without a sustain pedal it's so so ok, not so loud (the triangle sound), but with a pedal, it's really nerve-shattering. Sound can be heard very well if the E is repeated with a sustain pedal. I've tried opening the piano, putting my finger on various places on the E string, as long as the E sounds this sound comes also!!! TIN TIN TINNNNNN!!!!!!! It's a large Upright Piano from 1930, brand- Niendorf, very preserved. I don't how much is played on it, was in Switzerland before it came to me. Is it fixable? If yes, do you have any ideas? Should the strings be changed? It's on couple of keys like 6-7 keys, also the Keys around E - D and F also make this sound (but it's lower there - the volume of the sound).

Not if you do not call someone to fix it.

Everything is fixable. If you're asking for ideas on whay might be wrong, however, and what might be involved in that fixing it helps to know what type of pianos you have. Grand? Upright? Large? Small? Old? New? Played lots? Played little? Those sorts of things.

I'm not a tech but I think the noise you're describing seems similar to the way I describe the noise my old upright makes when the hammers double strike. If that is the problem a tech can usually fix it with some minor regulation.

You’ve had some heavy-hitters/renowned piano experts to reply to your post already, and I couldn’t shine a light to their expertise, but I will say that you’d be surprised at the annoyances that a slightly out-of-tune unison will cause. Plus, a hammer that needs just a little voicing can wreak havoc too. These things can cause all kinds of rings, pings, sizzles and unpleasant nuances that can make you unhappy.
BDB is on the right track…. You need expert help.
Take care,
Rick

Hi guys, thank you a lot! I've already contacted Piano Tuner, he said, nothing can be done about this(but he's not a technician), but DEL you gave my hope with your post, do you think something can be done? Thank you in advance! p.s. the Piano Tuner actually tried putting some piece of cloth there on the string, but it didn't help at all.

Hi guys, thank you a lot! Thank you in advance! p.s. the Piano Tuner actually tried putting some piece of cloth there on the string, but it didn't help at all. Well, everything can be fixed but sometimes the fix is complicated and expensive. How long have you had the piano? Has this sound been there all the time or is it something that has just started? Try this: with the dampers raised, play the bass note that bothers you the most—E?—and gently press against the tenor strings to see if you can stop the sounds that bother you. You are probably looking for strings about two or three octaves above the bass E note. Also look at the backscale—the length of wire between the bridge and the hitchpins. (If you don't know what to look for your piano tuner can help.) Is this portion of the strings treaded with felt or stringing braid? If not, play the notes that bother you and press against these strings to see if you can find any that are vibrating sympathetically with the note you are playing. From your description this sounds like a sympathetic vibration; that is, some string having a fundamental pitch that is the same as some partial of the bass E note is being excited. See if you can find which strings might be involved. ddf

I have the piano from a week, when I was testing it before buying it, didn't notice that, didn't grab my attention but I'm sure it was there, I just didn't focus my attention on some of the problematic keys. After detailed testing, the most problematic key, is the G note from C3 (small octave). (there are others also(around 4-5) but this one is the most soundy and irritating. When pressing G (even once), I can hear this sound, with a sustain or soft pedal pressed it doesn't make any difference, the sound is there ( with a sustain pedal pressed the sound is even more louder and irritating). With the dampers raised, I tried pressing all strings(in any possible way and place) above or below G from C3 and it didn't make a difference, the sound is still there, which excludes the sympathetic vibration caused from a neighbour string but the sympathetic resonance might be from some other part of the piano, I don't know. I tried locating where the sound comes from but it's very hard to locate where such type of sound is coming from, I guess it's close to the G string or it's somewhere from around that place but still, I'm not sure of that, it's very tricky because when I listen close to the bridge I can say it's from there as well I've checked if any strings located in the bottom part of the piano are vibrating sympathetically but couldn't find any. Again i've pressed them all, while playing the G, the sound didn't stop, of course one or two string did resonate but not in such a way, they just vibrated(shaked, moved, trembled slightly) from the sound which is normal I believe. The interesting thing I found out is that the highly pitched sound is the same as the note. What do I mean? For example when I play G the pitched sound sound like highly pitched G, when I play E, the strange sound sounds like highly pitched E and so on, every such pitched sound is the same as the note that produces it. That is picture from the bottom part where the bridge is located http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/1760/img7709c.jpgand And here I'm pressing the G note from C3 : http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/2717/img7712i.jpgThe only way to stop the sound is to press the middle string, when pressing strings 1 or 3 nothing happens, just number 2 the middle one and the sounds stops (so does the G itself). Finally this sound can also be described as a metallic sound as well. I've recorded some samples which if needed can upload and share them(but right now I don't because it a complex process-don't ask why :D) Del thank you again!

The only way to stop the sound is to press the middle string, when pressing strings 1 or 3 nothing happens, just number 2 the middle one and the sounds stops (so does the G itself). What is the top string termination like? What is the condition of the V-bar? Give us a picture of the area between the tuning pins and the V-bar. ddf

Nothing can be done from a distance. That includes over the internet.
You need to find someone to fix it if you want it fixed.

No, you cannot fix it by yourself. The cost of repairing it or whether it can be done at all cannot be determined without looking at and listening to the piano at the very least.

I think I also have this effect slightly, in a similar area. My piano tuner said that being out of tune gives this effect, his tuning of that note lightened the issue but IMHO it was still there.
There might be some problem with that middle G string. Maybe just out of tune, maybe it just needs replacement.

Yes, I understand, but I'm a human too, if it's something simple and somebody knows the reason I can try to fix it by myself or at least see if it's gonna cost expensive or is it fixable at all... Ask a car mechanic over the internet to tell you what the problem is with your car so you can possibly fix it yourself or even what the problem is and he will say, BRING IT IN so we can diagnose it. All anyone can do is guess from a distance. As I mentioned in a different post elsewhere, a bad tuner (or a bad DIY'er do it for that matter) cannot do much of anything usually to correct the problem on any piano but, they can make things worse. And, they and you, can make the expense greater for yourself. If, that happens then at that point, you might just be lucky enough to find a technician willing to follow up afterward... Whereas, a good technician can fix practically anything. The difference will be in the problem and $$$. You would be amazed at how easily some technicians can cure a problem for not all that much money if it is something relatively simple... And, you will be amazed at how fast good technicians start ignoring your posts when you start ignoring their best advice to you which is, get a good tech in there to look at it.
