It is forbidden to do a search to find the answer. If you do a search, by reading this remark you engage yourself to refrain from answering the question, although clever remarks are welcome.
On the other hand, a "call to a friend" is acceptable, on condition that you specify that you called a friend.
So, our trivia question today:
What is a pianoctail?
( Andromaque, you also are forbidden from answering. )

Piano music that is so lame and badly written that it is only performed 8 times before it's retired from the repertoire eternally.

Your logical facility is finely honed, P*D, and in tune with the "designer drink" times that we live in. Nice try, and on the scale of cold-warm-hot you are warm, or at least warmish. But we have to constate that the pianoctail hasn't yet arrived in the land of Jefferson and Washington. Piano music that is so lame and badly written that it is only performed 8 times before it's retired from the repertoire eternally. As a retired concert tech I'll bet you've heard a lot of those. Just had to get the word retired in there, didn't you. J'ai lu le livre.. How did you know? Mon petit doigt me l'a dit! You're a gentleman. You could have spilled the beans under a false user name, Boris for example.

Are we talking about mixing drinks, based upon which piano keys are played?

A mixed drink with a piano key as an ornament? Getting warm there! Are we talking about mixing drinks, based upon which piano keys are played? Getting real warm. Getting hot even. A less technical formulation, please, yours sounds like a Mattel toy, not like the real flesh-and-blood musical instrument that the pianoctail is.

BruceD You read it in french? I did, a while back, and i enjoyed it. I recommended it to a younger friend recently and he disliked the english translation. Don't know if there are several versions.. Do you?

No insult intended, to the contrary. I guess that us mountain folk are a little rough at the edges. Please accept my humblest apologies, chère dame.

Well, Sunday in the Pyrennees is drawing to an end so here's the answer:
In the book "l'Ecume des jours" ("The Froth on the Daydream" in the English translation) by Boris Vian the French jazz trumpetist, song writer, singer, novelist, poet, and who knows what else, the pianoctail is a piano that mixes a coctail that embodies the mood of the music played.
I guess that you'd have to have had a few real blue ones before being able to come up with that.

I'm completely at a loss - but I think that's the right answer. Heck, me too, I think that you had the right answer!
