Hi all, I am sure many of you know this music by Yann Tiersen. I would like to purchase the score, but so far all I've found is one book at SheetMusicPlus for over $40! frown I just want the music for that one piece.

What are the popular and reliable places to buy downloaded scores, one at a time? Any recommendations are appreciated! (I wonder if there's a copyright thing because he's a French composer??)

While we're at it, for those of you familiar with this music, what are the other pieces that are titled, maybe:
comptine d'un autre ete, 1
comptine d'un autre ete, 2
comptine d'un autre ete, 3???\

Anyway, any help appreciated!

Hi,

Sheet music laws prohibit the distribution of sheet music unless they are in free domain. From what I recall, free domain occurs 70 years after a composer's birth. This is why you often find sheet music from composers from Bach to Rachmaninoff freely available.

You will not be able to find a site that would openly distribute this sheet music, however, the sheet music forums at pianostreet.com is a popular spot for these type of requests. Some users there have stashes of sheet music that they are willing to share (heck I got Mozart-Volodos Turkish March transcription there)

speaking of google, why don't you just try that? ---But i know, I saw that collection for $40. at sheet music plus....it does seem overpriced. ---I don't know how good, accurate/good the version on scibed is but that's the top google search return.

Googlism, thanks for your reply, but you'll note that I am looking to buy the score, not get it for free. Unfortunately, from what I can find, it doesn't seem to be available for purchase as a single score, only as part of an expensive collection. This might be because the composer, who is about my age (IOW not dead yet!) is French, and unlike some American composers (like Nyman etc) may have different copyrights prohibiting release of single scores.

Limavady, not sure what you mean by "try Google," I have of course searched in general, trying different keywords, and I hav searched on SMP.com and Amazon. But nothing other than the expensive collection.

But since I am not really that familar with outlets for buying sheet music, other than SheetMusicPlus.com, I was hoping someone might be able recommend some place I haven't heard of yet. But if not, I may have to wait till I can splurge $40plus. frown

Shiro,
Have you tried a library? I just looked on the public library computer here & they have it as part of 2 different collections. They also have copy machines (In Canada, it's legal to copy 10% of printed material for one's own use - don't know what the laws are where you are)

Joyoussong, I did try my university's library yesterday (that's where I got Hanon, since my copy is still in Japan!) But I am going to try to search a few different ways, since my first search was from my iPhone, and although that works pretty good, I might get better results on the computer where I can do more specifics. As for the city library, I don't know where it is! whome But if my search in the campus libraries comes up empty, I will try the public library.

I wonder if I could convince the university library to buy a copy if they don't have one. I have done that with other books, but of course they were much more easily justifiable! (i.e. I was able to argue that the school needed a copy since it contained material for the MA exam, I can't make that argument this time...)

btw, thanks for mentioning The Inner Game of Music - I started reading it a couple of days ago, & a lot of what he says is really resonating. I'd been noticing my "inner critic" a lot lately, wondering how to handle it. Thanks!

They're from the cd "Rue Des Cascades". You have to scan through all the albums to pick out the piano pieces. The "Tabarly" CD has probably the most piano in it but I haven't seen official sheet-music for it.

Whoops! I mangled to responses together there. But the part about the Inner Game was meant for you, Shiro - you mentioned it a while ago in another thread, & I went looking for it. Serendipitous! (If that's a word)

smile No worries. Glad you found the Inner Game book helpful.

On the topic of the score for Comptine d'un autre ete, l'apres midi... I put in a request for my university's music library to purchase the score. We'll see what they say.

So....I put in a Google search for "Comptine d'un autre ete, l'apres midi sheet music" and got a copy on scribd.com as the first hit.

I understand that you wanted to purchase it....I am the same way when a purchased copy is available. I buy from Musicnotes.com all the time.

But on the other hand, if the publisher or distributors have chosen not to make it available at any reasonable price, then they've made a poor choice. I'd say, stop trying harder than they do and use whatever you can find.

Larry, it's a difficult problem. I don't want to use something that is a scan of the published book. But I did find someone's original transcript, so I think I will use that. Still, I feel a bit hypocritical. It's not like this is a dead composer, Yann Tiersen is probably not even 40 yet. So to me, that's different than some classical score that's been around foreven in various editions.

If Mr Tiersen wants to sell his scores in a book rather than by individual pieces, I guess we can't really tell him to do otherwise, that's his right. Then again, maybe the existence of all the pirated scans and original transcriptions should be a sign to make things available for sale if he wants to maximize his profits. I don't know. I feel very conflicted about it.

So I did ask my university's library to purchase a copy, and they might. The music library is quite large. And at some point I will probably buy the book myself, since I'll want some of the other pieces there. But in the meantime, I'll use an arrangement that is someone's original transcription. And feel mildly guilty about it! laugh

So, is there not a site where you can purchase downloads of individual pieces? In all of my different searches, it seemed I either found SheetMusicPlus or various free/possibly illegal sites. That's kind of distressing.

By the way, I should add I also think it's worthwhile to pay for classical scores that are edited or printed well, like Henle versions etc. I think paying for sheet music is important, someone went to the effort to make it available (that doesn't even begin to cover), why should we get it for free? Having said that, I don't want to buy something I'm not going to play, so I wish things were available by the piece.

There's just no good solution. Other than federally subsidizing artists?? Or I just need to become wealthy enough so that I don't worry about paying $50 for one score...

I love PW!! Several people have PMed me (thank you all!) And one poster suggested downloading an original transcription, and added

Quote:
if you want to pay for it, why not send the money directly to Yann Tiersen?

Best suggestion ever! And it just shows what a hypocrit I am that I didn't even think of that. I wonder if I sent US $5 to Mr Tiersen in France, if he would get it.

For now I'll keep my $5 and plan to put it towards some sheet music in the coming months.

So, if after all this, I submit this to the ABF recital, will I be ousted from ABF??

Good luck with that one, I am sure you will do well. I tried this last year but it was too difficult for me to handle. Maybe I'll give it another go sometime in the future...it will be a good benchmark on improvement.
Here is a good video.

Carl. Thanks for linking the video here. I like this video much better than the animated short that breaks my heart everytime I see it!

Next up, a discussion of those 16th notes? I'm trying to decide how I want to count them.

I think they'll sound better by counting:

[123-123-123-123-1234]

rather than just

[1e&a-2e&a-3e&a-4e&a]

Note that one set of bracket is one measure, 4/4 time, and all the notes technically have the same value (16th notes). But the first way of counting makes it easier to put the accent on the lower Bb. However conting that way may also make it a little harder to synch up the RH with the LH. We'll see how it goes!

You are welcome. I love the shot at the end of the magnificent gold tree in the sea of green.

The [1e&a-2e&a-3e&a-4e&a] seems to be a bit easier for me to track.

Shirokuro,

I've got that book, that sells on the internet for 44 dollars. What an incredible price! I bought it last year in Holland, and I don't think I paid more then 20 euro's. No idea where the difference comes from. the book has more beautiful pieces then just comtine d'ete. I also love Valse D' Amelie and a few others...
