I want to buy a digital piano with weighted key for my 7 years old son, he has been practice on keyboard for half a year. Could anybody tell me the difference between Casio® Celviano AP-420 and Privia PX-800?
I like the look of Celviano AP-420, but Privia PX-800 seems to have more functions. Also 1 thing confusing is the keys, does Celviano AP-420 also has weighted keys? below are the key feature listed on costco.ca website.
Celviano AP-420: 88 keys with touch response Privia PX-800: 88 weighted, scaled hammer-action keys with touch response
Thanks, Helen

the 420 is the newer model as it has the triple sensor keyboard (weighed) and the new sound source, it'd be comparable to the 830/730 more than the 800. With the $300 off deal going on right now it does seem like a much better value compared to the 800

I thought the casio mmodels that end in "30" were the latest current models the "20" is older. I think there was a jump in quality going from 20 to 30. If this is for a 7 year old learning to play then all you need is the grand piano voice. the PX130, 330 or 830 would be the ones to look at. The price for this is reasonable. the higher model numbers give you more non-piano features if you like them. px130 home bundle

the '-30 = newer' is true for the PX series, the AP series appears to have different numbering, the AP-x20 appear to be the latest available in the cabinet series

So while you might be technically correct saying "latest available in the cabinet series" this is not the same at all as "latest available".

The Celviano line is the same as the Privia line except for the furniture style console cabinet. The Celvianos share the same keybeds and sound source as the Privias. Getting to your original question, the AP-420 would be better as it has a better piano sample and better keyboard action with the 3rd sensor. The PX-800 is now discontinued, but is a very nice DP. It is nearly the same as the PX-830 except for the piano sample and improved keyboard performance. The PX-800 also has more sounds (162) than the PX-830 (16). The PX-830 is the same as the PX-130 but with the nicer stand. I would make the decision based on price. PX-800 were clearanced at 699. If the Celviano is around this much, I would get that.

Thanks for the information galaxy4t. I heard that the PX is enter level, the AP is better than PX, is that true? Where did you find PX-800 clearanced at $699?

..I heard that the PX is enter level, the AP is better than PX, is that true?... Depends on how you define "better" the AP series is designed to look nicer. But the PX line was more recently refreshed with samples and key action improvements. It's just as frustrating with Yamaha. You'd think they'd put their "latest and greatest" into their higher end pianos. But no. It takes a while for the new stuff to migrate throughout the full line.

Chris, once again, it seems that the PX-x30 and AP-x20 are the exact same keybeds/sample technology: the AP-x20 are quite recently refreshed as well.

Thanks for the information galaxy4t. I heard that the PX is enter level, the AP is better than PX, is that true? Where did you find PX-800 clearanced at $699? Helen, The PX-800 was clearanced Summer 2009. Guitar Center had them at $699. They sold for $899 regular price. You may well still be able to find one of these. I bought one of these myself, but returned it because I wanted something with registration memory, accompaniment, rhythms, and more sounds. I also had some concerns about the plastic pedal assembly. The PX-800 had more sounds than the PX-830 which replaces it if that is of interest to you. The PX-830 resembles the PX-130 in terms of number of voices. The 830 has a more powerful amp (40 watt amp (20x20) and nicer speakers than the 130. I consider the CDP series Casio's entry level models. If you don't need the fancy cabinet, the 130 will do nicely and save you money.

My opinion is DO NOT BUY the older Casio series such as the PX800. The change in technology on the new models PX830 and AP220 & 420 was huge for improvements in the piano tone, touch, control, decay, sustain time, release, etc, etc. The extra sounds on the older PX800 are not worth a person giving up the better piano technology on the new products. You may spend less money for the older versions, but you'd be sacrificing a lot of improvement:)
