My current project is Lee Evan's arrangement of "Someone to Watch Over Me", which uses rolling tenths (and other things) in the LH. Sometimes if they are within my reach I can get them, but sometimes, if I have to lift my hand, I am not sure of the target and it's hit and miss. I wonder if there are some tricks for getting the feel of them into my fingers? BTW, I try very hard not to look at the keys, otherwise I lose my place in the music.

The trick is to practice. Slow and accurate, before you build up speed. You need to keep your wrist relaxed and let it pivot.

When I make the attempt at playing 10ths in the left hand, frequently I will roll the 10th with a 5th in the middle, for example, C-G-E. Playing that G (the fifth) helps you keep your bearing on landing the E when rolling from C to E when you do it quickly.

You can also substitue a 6th or 7th instead of the 5th to add flavor or alter the position of the 10th (inverted triad).

Practice walking the 10ths by playing a chromatic scale, rolling the root, fifth, and tenth up the scale and down the scale.

One thing...do this exercise sparingly at first so as to allow your and/wrist to become used to that type of position. (Kind of like getting in shape wink )

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the ideas of "slow and accurate" and "exercise sparingly" as I tend to get a little frustrated, thinking I should be ripping around the circle or up and down the chromatic scale. The Lee Evan's arrangement uses the 6th and 7th substitutions which definitely adds the "jazzy" element to the piece, but also adds more variability to the intervals which compounds the learning process.
