I had chance to try a Technics piano and was very impressed with both the feel and sound. This has made me think that a Technics might be a solution to my search for a second piano to keep for practice in a holiday home, though I haven't yet researched the models. I am looking to spend less than £500.

I understand that Technics are no longer in business, so I am wondering if it will be possible to get spares and find someone who will service it, if necessaary. I am in the UK.
Any thoughts and experience of this will be a great help. If the spares are likely to be a major problem then this plan will be a non-starter. I'd also be interested to know members views of the Technic digital pianos and which models would be worth looking for. I am mainly interested in classical piano practice - don't need bells and whistles.

Many thanks.

Parts are no longer available, but it might be worth checking what Mike Barden (a competent and experienced repairer)has to say on this subjects:

Is there something about these that makes them better than what you can buy new for the same price.

The other question to ask about repair is not just if it is possible but the cost. I'd hate to pay the cost of a ew piano for reppair a very old one. The same resoning applies to older acoustic uprights. At some point there is no economic justification to repair (when the cost of repair approaches the market value of the piano)

I read that web page and I know what he says about surface mont re-work. He is talking about parts that are hard to see. I've done a little of this work and simply can't work without a powerful loupe for magnification and good tweezers. I can't imagine he does this kind of work without charging a high hourly rate.

There is also the following, based near Swindon.

I happen to have a Technics PX663, which I bought fairly cheaply to test the waters as far as learning a piano is concerned. However, the touch (although certainly not light) is sufficiently different to that of the Schimmel baby grand that my piano teacher has that it causes me *major* problems in my lessons. So I am going to have to get an acoustic piano in the very near future, I guess.

I know that the top of the range Technics DPs have been used by one ex-professional concert pianist (who was mainly active on the concert platform in the 60s/70s and whom many people will have heard of) and one serious amateur whose main piano is a Steinway. However I don't think the DP I have is in the same class.
