I'm working on a project and I was wondering if anyone had information on the percentage of U.S. kids that play piano and how that compares to 30 years ago. I'd appreciate any thoughts or if you could point me in the right direction.

I understand more people "play the piano" than take regular lessons. What I'm really interested in is the change from 1980 (or 1970 or 1960) to present. Even a rough guess is more information than I currently have. Thanks.

I'm not aware of any studies that have been done, but ask in the Piano Forum. Instrument dealers are very aware of the statistics regarding instrument sales. I know Brian Chung (Vice President of Kawai America) has mentioned stats on instrument sales in his lectures - you may see if he has anything online (youtube, articles, etc...)

From a teacher's perspective and I have no numbers from studies done, just in observation in private studios and private students in lower grade schools through high schools and incoming students to Universities the numbers have dropped drastically as has, I feel the quality. It is harder to find those over the top students. I'm talking about the last 10 years. But I have no numbers
