And I thought back then hammers were so soft they didn't need tenderizing  Also interesting they are promoting needling of the "sacred" spot.

That said it neddle the same direction than the finisher voicer/technician I have seenn in the Steinway movie I have seen lately, he was needling straight vertically around and in the strike zone (not very deep indeed)
I was always told that needling vertically (out of the strike zone) will tear the fiber much, and that keeping an angle limit that tearing.
May be not so important in case of impregnated soft hammers.
