Hi,

I'm looking for something that would allow me to record the analog output of my DP to my computer.

This is my equipment:

• HP-307 DP: it has two 1/4" L/R line-out jacks.
• "Decent" laptop: Intel T9300 Dual Core @ 2.5GHz with 4GB RAM; 7200RPM drive; USB 2.0 ports. I use both 32-bit Vista and 32/64-bit Linux.

I'd like to spend less than $200, and it seems that the Tascam US-122mkII would work (it is $100 at B&H); It also supports MIDI in/out, tho I'm not too interested in that (yet?).

Would the above work well? Any other products I should consider (I also saw mention of the Lexicon Alpha somewhere, and it is $80 at B&H).

There must be at least a dozen competing products.

Recording from the line out jacks of the HP307 is an un-demanding job for an audio interface. If you were looking to record with microphones then you might look harder at the interface. The better audio interfaces have better mic preamps inside. But for line level recording all of them work well enough.

Look at the Tascam 144. It adds a separate headphone volume adjustment to the 122. It's worth it. Otherwise when you switch over from head phones you are always having to reach for a mounse on the computer screen. The 144 also has a s/pdiff digital I/O (for maybe an A/V receiver or?)

Others to look at are made by Presonus, MOTU, Focusright
Look for one that is bundled with software you want. You will need software to record, edit and post process you recording. The Tascan units come with CuBase which f you are n a PC is a good low cost and popular option for recording.

I think unless you want the 144 the 122 will do fine. I'd pay the extra $$ just for th headphone volume control knob.

Thanks! I hadn't noticed the 144. I'll also take a look at some of the other manufacturers you mentioned.

Have had the older original model us122 for many years and it's sound quality and reliability are quite good. Been thinking of upgrading to a 144mkII myself. For the digital i/o and more importantly to me, for the Win7 64-bit driver support.

I use the 144 Tascam -it's pretty nice and serves as a decent midi interface as well for playing samples off of the computer.
