Hi all,

I have been working with a teacher for about 4 months now and have achieved a level approximate to "late beginner/early intermediate". Up until now, for exercises, I have been using the "Junior Hanon". Having gone through the entire first half of that book, my teacher now wants me to start on some Czerny studies to "take it to the next level". What would everyone here recommend ? I am leaning towards Czerny's "School of Velocity". That seems like it should be suitable well through the intermediate grades. Your ideas are greatly appreciated.

Czerny and Hanon are both helpful. One of the nice things about Hanon is that once you learn the initial pattern of each exercise, it's the same every measure, you just go up one note after that in each measure. So you don't have to focus so much on sight reading every note in each exercise. Czerny exercises are more like real pieces in that you do need to sight read every note, so with Czerny you get some sight reading practice as well as the acquiring the technical skills.

I'm using Czerny and loving it! The pieces really sound like "real music" - and even without the teacher's input I can easily see what each exercise is geared to helping me learn.

I can't speak on Hanon as I haven't used those books.

Follow your teacher's instructions and practice wisely/much, and you'll soon wonder how you ever found it hard. BobPickle
