Hi! I'm teaching students that are 15-18 years old, mostly beginners. I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions of how to use film tutorials in a good way? I've just tried it on one of my own pieces (intermediate level) and would be glad for som feedback of how to use this method in the best way. See the tutorial on youtube or www.vildbas.com Happy Easter! /Emil, Sweden

Very haunting composition!
I'm not sure I could consider that a "tutorial" though. It looks like you have used notation software view along with a key view, but I'm not sure how easy that would be to learn from. I do have teenagers who go to youtube and try to learn music this way however. Maybe I was expecting more of a "lesson" in the piece, more information in the way of comments, etc. I'm probably just too "old school."

What do you mean by "add comments?"
It looks like Camtasia does everything you're wanting, and they offer a free 30-day trial, so why not download it and find out?

Might it not be more simple, to just play the piece slowly, and use a microphone, to talk the student through it? YouTube has an annotations feature for text comments.
I have seen many tutorial videos, using fancy animations, graphics and various video effects, but IMHO, nothing beats the personal approach.

The best I've seen are those by Mario Ajero and Hugh Sung. On the jazz side, I like what this guy has done: http://www.youtube.com/user/jazz2511

As Kreisler mentione, the Hugh Sung videos are a good example. He'll play the piece, then break down various sections giving hints on how to play it, all of which you can't get from just seeing the score and keys. Whilst his breakdown is pretty much note for note and likely a lot more detailed than you're looking for in your videos. It could be uesful to break down specific sections of a piece that are technically demanding or you have useful tips for and talk about your approach to that section. A lot of the youtube tutorial style videos I've seen are along the lines of which keys to press rather than really teaching anything about a piece or how to play it.
