What software would you use for creating multi-track music with a digital piano? (quantization feature is an advantage)
I use "Logic" but that does not run on Windows.
Think about the features you want. Do you need to manage and blend multiple takes. How easy is "punch-in" recording? Does the quantization feature need to be "smart" and know about swing and other styles that don't exactly follow a metronome? Do you like to work in standard music notation and do you need quality engraving.
All the software has the same basic functions difference are at the level of (say) how sophisticated the time quantization is and if you can fine tune it. Other details are things like how good it sounds if you correct a beat on a vocal track, can you stretch without pitch shifting? What if two tracks are not quite in time? How well does non-linear "time warp" work?
Other things the differentiate DAWs are the are the level of sophistication built into the effects. How god is the reverb at letting you design a space and same for limiters and compressor using in mastering. Like I said, they all will have the same basic feature but the big guys will have almost bottomless depth.
One of the problems with buying a DAW is that it takes months you learn the features and then you are invested in the software and don't like to switch. So, don't buy based on price or just which ever you find first. It really does make sense to go with a market leader. If you do then you will be able to buy books at Amazon or commercial "how to" tutorial videos or even take classes at a local collage.
With Windows PCs ProTools is by far the market leader and the de facto industry standard but it's expensive and requires special hardware. All the other DAWs live inside a sliver of the pie chart but of those I think CuBase is a leader.
What I'd do to help decide it is buy a book. Amazon will have many. Get one. reading it will give you a good feel for if you will like the software. easier then a book is a good video. This might let you knw if you'd like CuBase:
