Who has planned their students' recital with the order of pieces starting with Baroque and ending with pop/rock?
I am going to try this. One of my youngest students, age 7 years old and a new player, is begging to "go last". He is playing Star Wars and another newer piece, so I thought starting with Baroque and going forward would be a way to set the program. So this means some students will go up at least twice to play. Has anyone planned their recitals this way and if so, did it work well? Did you go into any detail/explanation of the time periods in music or did you just list them?

Ditto. Works especially well when you have a large studio with students maintaining lots of repertoire. They can play twice, at two different points in the recital.
It adds emphasis to the music being played, rather than total emphasis on who's performing. And for many parents, it's a total revelation that there is music written 350 years ago which is enjoyable and playable today (oh, and don't forget to put in the program that Bach was born 325 years ago and is still considered one of the finest composers of all time!).
Good luck with your recital.
