Hi.....
First, I want to say hello to everyone here, because I'm new here and this is my first post.

Right now, I'm looking for a new digital piano. I'm going to use it at my church. I need a digital piano that has great action and great piano & pad sound (w/ weighted keys). So far, I am interested w/ the Roland RD-700GX.

I hope you guys can give me some advice on choosing the best DP for me. Thanks!

(Comments about Yamaha Motif also welcomed)

The Motif is not really a digital piano. It is a more general purpose instrument. If piano is the main focus get the RD700GX and be sure to also get the "SuperNatural" upgrade card.

You will of course need a sound system but I assume the church has a good PA already. Is it up to the task? You used it with other DPs?

zak1995, what is your budget? Are you looking for a (portable) stage-piano only?

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it. laugh

Are there any other DPs that has great piano & pad sound (My budget is between $2000-$3000)?

Oh, I almost forgot. I also need a new keyboard that has great string, brass, and oboe sound. I'm planning to play the piano and the keyboard together. Any recommendations?

$2000-$3000.

Yes, I prefer the portable one because the space for the musical instruments at my church is small.

Maybe you have a chance of combining everything with only one solution, a stagepiano with all extra sounds (and a keyboard split of course).

For instance, the new Yamaha CP5 stagepiano could do the trick for you. Of course, you have to try it out yourself first. See also this thread:

Thanks for the advice. Well, maybe I should give it a test drive someday.

Btw, is the CP5 heavier than the GX?

I hate to simply say "read the manual" but seriously, that is the best thing you could do. Download the user manuals for all of the pianos you are considering and read then front to back.

You need to know not only the features but if they are easy enough to understand that you could actually use them during a performance. For example my Yamaha P155 allows you to control the relative volume of layered sounds but the control is way to hard to be of use on stage (you press function button then down arrow multiple times, then enter then more arrow buttons and so on. Not going to happen on stage.) But on the Yamaha stage pianos the control is moved to a simple slider. It's this kind of thing to look at and it's only in the manual.

To me the Roland RD900 looks to have about 100 controls all accessible while the Yamaha has a much cleaner looking control panel. Which is best? Depends on how you use the piano. The Roland will have more sounds than the CP series Yamaha.

Thanks for the advice! I'll give the CP5 a shot.

Ummm, any recommendations for the keyboards?

Yes it's a typo. The RD700GX. I think the new Yamaha CP5 is for people needing acoustic and electric piano sounds. Also there is a CP50 comming out soon that will be like the CP5 but lower cost and use the GH key action

Yamaha has many pianos but only a small handfull for different key actions. "GH" is their name for one of their better keys actions used up until now for all of their stage pianos, the P155 and YDP160. The CP5 uses a new action that is lighter and ungraded but the CP50 will use the same GH as many current Yamaha DPs.

Does Roland DPs have something similar to this?
