So I just discovered something after 2 months of owning a digital piano that I suspect is nothing new to you guys.
I can record myself playing Presto Agitato 3rd movement of Moonlight Sonata at 1/4 the correct tempo and then play it back 4 times faster it actually sounds like there is a melody. Dayum this is getting fun !!!

Then you can play it through several times, or just the hard parts multiple times then you can select the best parts of each take and then if required fix a few mistakes, wrong notes, time align the notes with the beat and the like. Most commercial recording is done that way. So is it "cheating" or simply "professional technique?"

Professional technique - anyway you can't hear the difference, only when you really play live...

I think its cheating, I'm really just having some fun for now. There is no way I can play that piece for many years yet but when you are going through something so slowly its hard to tell if its every going to sound right. I played it for my family and said that its me. They all just looked at me in disbelief. Its definately cheating If anything this motivated me to realize yes it will eventually start to sound like the piece if I can get my coordination to that level.

Well I definitely prefer to play live. Only for my own compositions I would do this to get it as perfect as possible (but still not like a real piano pro).

I know what you mean, I'm working on something now by Schumann and I'll admit that at tis point it sound nothing at all like music. I'm at about 2 notes per second.
But I have done tne over dub and edit trick. It is completely different from live recording and my goal was just to make some recorded music for use in a photo slide show. I also dropped in some other instruments.

I really enjoy listening to Chopin's etude opus 10 number 1 in tempo 60 because then it's really possible to hear what is actually being played and I learn a lot from it. But I'll not be able to play that etude in this lifetime.

Dayum this is getting fun !!! I discovered a related trick recently. When polishing up a piece that's already up to speed, I can play it back at 3x speed and listen to the "big picture" of how it came across. Problems such as uneven tempo or awkward phrasing and dynamics really stick out in the condensed rendition.
