A few months ago toyboy introduced me to Respighi's Notturno, an amazingly beautiful piece. (You can hear his excellent recording here.).
(Edit: Looks like it's not available any more.)

So I got a copy and worked it up. You can hear my recording of it here. Hope you enjoy it.

I made the recording on my piano (Baldwin L, 6'3", built in 1966 or 1967), using my Zoom H2 recorder placed about 3 ft to the right of the piano (directly to the right of the treble end of the keyboard), and just a little higher than the top of the piano rim. Mics were facing toward the center of the soundboard.

I played this piece at a piano party about a month ago, but made everyone play "guess the composer." A lot of people there were familiar with a lot more music than I, but no one guessed correctly. grin

A very beautiful performance. I first heard this piece in a concert by Earl Wild at Mannes a while ago.

I must confess that I don't like page four nearly as much as the rest of the piece(talking about the composition, not your performance).

Hi Chris,

We don't often hear piano music by Respighi, as he was more of an orchestral composer. This is a gorgeous piece, and you play it thoughtfully and beautifully in a way that's very sympathetic to the composer. Also your Baldwin piano sounds great! Thanks for posting this.

pianoloverus, I agree with you: page 4 doesn't hang together quite as well as one would wish. It's a bit too,..vertical. But overall, I like the piece a lot.

RachFan, thanks for your comments! The Baldwin was just tuned and adjusted (minor) about 3 days ago, so it's in tip-top shape at the moment.

This is not a piece I had heard before, but I certainly enjoyed your playing of it; it was quite beautiful.

There's nothing like a freshly tuned and tweaked piano, is there? The Baldwin L sounds lovely and was nicely recorded, too.

Thank you for sharing that.

Regards,

BruceD

BruceD, I'm happy to have brought it to your attention, and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. Yes, it's a lovely piece, and not known to me until toyboy recorded it and remarked on it in this forum. And yes, there's nothing like a "fresh" piano!

I just listened to this again for pleasure this morning (third listening). If Piano World had a greatest hits, I'd want this to be on it.
